I have also rerouted the first and last day of the trip. Because we would like to miss the Piet Retief - Pongola section, the route will now go via Delmas, Standerton, Volksrust, Vryheid and Hluhluwe. But as it is with everything in life, we now have some disadvantages. The route is nearly 100km longer and because we have a group of 10 or more bikes, the average speed is typically 80km/h. The new route being a distance of 720km, will thus take us app 10hrs to complete.
We will therefore leave at 6:30 for 7:00 from the Garstkloof Engen on the R50 on Friday 7 August. Please note that there will be no sitdown meals during our trip. Please have breakfast at home or take some snacks along. We will stop at Standerton (App 200km), Vryheid (app 220km) and Hluhluwe (220km) for fuel. During this time you are asked to also buy some take-away food.
Knopkop will make a formal announcement at Friday's social on my behalf.

BTW, if we are planning to go from Volksrust south towards Newcastle/Utrecht - there were serious roadworks just after Volksrust (when I went through there mid-May). Could fortunately go past the cars to the front, but still had to wait a bit... about 4 stops I think.

Drix, That is the plan yes. It seems that there are roadworks everywhere at this stage. Hopefully there are now less stops on the section...

Re: Kosi Bay GS ride 7-10 August
What if we do the following route: Pretoria, Delmas, Kriel, Bethal, Ermelo, Piet Retief, Vryheid, Mkuze, Hluhluwe, Mbazwane?? The route is only 20km longer (total distance 725km) and we then miss both the Utrecht and Pongola Road works.
I understand that the Vryheid to Jozine stretch is scenic enough

Pieter,
I like this route.
I will try and get hold of Sephton (Kawasefi), he lives in Vryheid, and maybe he knows the condition of the road between Vryheid and Piet Retief.

Re: Kosi Bay GS ride 7-10 August
Intermediate Risk Areas
In intermediate risk areas (Kosi Bay, Sodwana Bay, Mkuze Game Reserve and St Lucia Lake (not the town of St Lucia and the river mouth), the use of anti-malarial drugs is advisable only for high risk people from October to May. Check with your physician or travel clinic.
People at particular risk who should take extra precautions are:
• children under 5
• adults over 65
• pregnant women
• people on long term steroids
• people receiving chemotherapy
• people with Aids / HIV, porphyria or epilepsy
• people who have had their spleens removed
• chronically ill patients
I've had my cat removed, does it mean I am at risk....?

Doubt it if we will have problems during August. Only an intermediate risk in the area for the Months from October to May for high risk people....

Well... I think a prophylactic (course of pills), insect repellant (Tabard / peaceful sleep) and a mosquito net will give you adequate protection.
Or just All The Gear All The Time. No way a mosquito will get you!

Nee jong... ek dink ek gaan die een moet skip
My hart wil baie graag gaan, maar tussen my onlangse trippies, nuwe kombuiskaste en drama by die werk moet ek my sosiale verpligtinge spasieer. Sal maar 'n kort trippie by Sambok daai naweek inwerk.
Sorry, ek gaan julle verlang
