Re: Kosi Bay GS ride 7-10 August
OK boys and girls
The tannie came back to me. We can stay at Camp Jonathan http://www.oceanextreme.co.za/accomodation.htm
This is a luxury tented camp next to Maak 'n Jol and about 4km from the beach.
The prices is quite reasonable at R150 pppn. All you have to bring is your own bedding
The food and other stuff we can buy at Mbazwane if required.

Re: Kosi Bay GS ride 7-10 August
I really like the setup at ocean extreme! Would love to have a few coooold ones around those swimming pool tables…. But it is too far from the see to my liking. I’d therefore prefer the accommodation in your trip document… There is also a nice bar where we can recover after a day’s sand riding!

Re: Kosi Bay GS ride 7-10 August
I am doing a play-off study on the Kosi accomodation options:
Sodwana bay
Pro's
- Close to sea
- Camping and chalet option
Cons
- Pricy (R330pppn) for chalets
- Sand on camping spot ("Grinding paste" in sleeping bag )
- Campers must take all camping gear
- Far from the "wet spots"
- Far from shops etc
Camp Jonathan
Pro's
- Close to "wet spot"
- No camping gear required except sleeping gear
- Nice atmosphere with braai and pool
- Well priced (R150pppn)
- Camping in luxury with paved surfaces
- Closer to shops
Cons
- Far from sea - 3km
- No chalet option
- More expensive camping (R150 vs R90)
As I am high on the atmosphere and no sand camping, I would go for the Camp Jonathan option.
Other inputs/ideas etc are welcome

Bring your turbo blower along. So that we can make sure the trip participants and divers do not oversleep

Camp Jonathan sounds good to me! We have staid at Sodwana before… and I like going to new places!
After looking at the trip document again, I’m not entirely convinced about sticking to the highway so much… I know it’s to get there faster and all, but you gotta hate them booooooring highways!

Re: Kosi Bay GS ride 7-10 August
I agree with Sias. We went to Mozambique via Kosi Bay border this past weekend, and there are terrible roadworks all the way between Piet Retief and Pongola. We lost an hour there even when there was almost no traffic (at 5am on a Saturday morning). We came back via Vryheid and the route between Jozini and Vryheid will be an absolute pleasure with a bike and very scenic!

That sounds like enough reason to avoid a highway. Especially if the highway will not do what it is meant to do: "GET YOU THERE FASTER!"

Re: Kosi Bay GS ride 7-10 August
I am sure the Vryheid - Jozine route will be much more scenic, but unfortunately it is also 110km longer, which means about 1 and 1/2 hours extra riding. If we loose an half an hour on the Pongola stretch we will still be an hour in the plus. Remember that the bikes are always much faster through the roadworks than cars, as we can jump the waiting cars and trucks.
Unfortunately the first and last days of the trip is quite a distance, if you have a group of 5 or more. The typical average speed of groups larger than 5 is app 80km/h for the day. We will see how we progress during the day and if i see we are ahead of schedule we can consider alternatives. Last time we also went on the "highways" and only arrived at last light at Sodwana.
I am considering going via Jozini instead of Hluhluwe if time permits.
