ENGLAND BIKE RIDE: 24 July - 1 August 2010
The Rides Committee has agreed to a suggestion that our (Trudie & Johan Maree) forthcoming bike ride in the Southern England and Wales be recognised as a club ride as we would welcome and encourage other club members to accompany us on this once in a lifetime (...or beginning of others) experience.
We are renting an RT in London and will use it for the whole term.
The itinerary is as follows:
Arrival early 24 July @ Heathrow 19km per day
Collect rental bike, visit London eye, Tower bridge, St Paul’s and others
Overnight Piccadilly Backpackers
25 July: London all day 13km per day
Overnight Piccadilly Backpackers
26&27 July: Trip to the south 259km per day plus 132km the next day
2 nights at Britport (on the beach front!) in the Dorset area. Outride to Southampton and ferry to Isle of Wight.
28 July: Trip to Salisbury and Stonehenge. 114km per day
Overnight Salisbury
29 July: Trip to Bristol 123km
Overnight Avebury
30&31 July: Day trip with local Beemers in the Severn Bridge area. 77km per day plus unknown
The Wales chapter of the UK BMW club is organising a day long ride for us with a gettogether at probably one of the members' residences that evening. This may just be the climax of the whole trip.
Overnight in the area
1 August: Depart to London - return the rental bikes - Fly home. 359km per day
The route:
From the middle of July the high season starts and UK is a popular holiday destination during that time. I do believe that bookings are still possible but the longer one waits the more difficult it may become.
Our trip has been finalised to the last detail and we can assist in most queries.
It is not required to return home with us on the 1st August. One is welcome to stay longer and do your own thing.
Intereted?

Sounds like a very good trip - riding around the English countryside trying to pretend to be an English gentleman!
..but on a serious note for anyone interested - all the planning is done, you only need to book. Should be a memorable trip.

Bit to close to our RT trip in Germany - made mention of it on another thread. Would be interesting to compare notes with Johan as to the rental cost of the bike.

You've got 2 chances - work out the odds - and the time frame is somewhat short.

Remember to take your Wellington boots and Macintosh's...
...and the locals only speak English and Welsh, BTW.
