Perske, by now you must be back from Oppi Koppi, so give us all the gory details and tell us what we missed. I am sure LeRoy wants to know how your (not so) 3 star accommodation was!

Re: OPPIKOPPI musical festival 7-9 August
I was invited to an Oppikoppie once, by a friend of mine who went along to chaperone his two kids of school going age. I went to the ablutions for the first time and found a door on one end that said "Ladies" so I walked around to the other end that said "Gents" and went in...
It was one room, with two doors. Urinals on my end, showers on one side and toilets on the other. Unisex ablutions with two doors to give a semblance of decency....
Walking about early one morning I spotted a young student walking back from the showers, drying his hair with his towel as he carried his toiletries bag in the other hand.
He wore slip-slops on his feet...that's it - just slip-slops and his birthday suit. Nobody gave him a second glance - it was Woodstock and 1969 all over again.
I caught the whiff of weed more than once and partial nudity from both sexes without much ado. I remembered my own activities at that age and I smiled...

Now I know why Perske was so keen to go. He missed out on Woodstock and the hippie era. One should go to Oppi Koppie in an old VW Kombi (the bread bin type) painted full of flowers!!

The accommodation was a bit dusty...very dusty. I camped far away from the entrance with no movement from feet or vehicles past me so the dust was limited. No disturbing noise either. Luckily the GS could go in far between the thorn trees where the 4 wheelers could not dare. All in all it was very enjoyable and full of fun.

They must have since then done some upgrades. A separation wall must have been built.
But you still smile a lot at this venue.... even if you are not a smoker

Koppi Creatures:
Koppi Creatures: The airy, lightweight skirt
Good air-conditioning for the heat and dust, although perhaps not great if you have knees that can bend forwards. Still, accessorized with a leather hat and a stubbly chin, not a bad look.

Koppi Creatures: The drunken buddies
"There's always one". Or in this case, or in the Oppikoppi case, hundreds. Operating in pairs, younger males assist each other's survival until one of them actually passes out, at which point he is abandoned. Or sometimes just lost. But don't worry, Jannie is nie dood nie...

Koppi Creatures and Customs: The homemade Oppi t-shirt.
This tells the world you're not just funny, you're cheap too. No, seriously, it's good to get arty. Even if you're just writing Oppikoppi RULE! Deep, broer. Now buy a shirt instead of wasting your mom's money on Klippies.

Humour drinks containers
It's not enough to drink from the plastic cups provided by the bar folk. The discerning Oppikop-peep needs to make a statement about his alcohol consumption. If you want to make a statement about your proud rural roots, then get an animal skin sak, the Limpopo version of the silver hipflask. Or if you're urban and proud of it, just a coke bottle will do.

Re: OPPIKOPPI musical festival 7-9 August
Yes, they are very scarce and rusted now. Richard, I can just picture you in a Kaftan with sandles and your beard and the long hair we used to have in those days. Certainly would've earned you the nickname 'Moses'. Would love to see a photoRichard H wrote:If you find one that still runs, I'M IN...!

Re: OPPIKOPPI musical festival 7-9 August
Just as well LeRoy did not go (because he does not like anything below 3 stars) because with the LT he would've had to camp with the 4x4's. But jokes aside, I am glad you enjoyed it. Hope the music was good too. Pity I could not join you but we must plan for the next Underberg festival.Perske wrote:Andre wrote:Perske, by now you must be back from Oppi Koppi, so give us all the gory details and tell us what we missed. LT aside - glad we dodged this bullet. Seems like this was -3star accommodation. And i doubt of the Oppikoppie Poppies made up for it. Perhaps Perske should post a few pictures.

Yes, I must say I am keen to see some pictures. So Perske, please prove to us you were there. The GS and the tent in the dust will be enough evidence.

You bet i am going to the Splashey fenn festival in 2009 over Easter. I have been there and although it is further from Pretoria it is better to go there on 2 wheels. No dust at all and the camping area have lushes green grass everywhere. The "souties" from Durbs is also bad campers and they tend to come to you to sas out your equipment. Tents and dry wood is usually not on the priority list.

Think it is more likely that Hermien grapped the pics - all the Oppikoppie Poppies and suchlike.
