Hi Peter, you do not have to join, just visit with us. There is absolutely no pressure. I am not on the committee but I can tell you I really enjoy the company (my wife and I are both members). The company is great, the rides are great and you can meet and chat to many people on this forum about biking, routes, trips, tehnology etc.
The owners of Bavaria Motorcycles are also keen supporters of biking and the club. I like to just hang out there sometimes looking at the great machines and just wasting their time a little.
After a while you will also join - thats just how great the people are.
Re: Tell us who you are?
Yes iceman, come and check us out first social every first Friday of a month from 18:00 onwards at Bavarian Motorcycles. Us, we are a good bunch.....no politics and s#*t......just make sure your bike's pipe is not too loud......... (joking of course)

Re: Tell us who you are?
Well I am Alun, just joined the club 1 month ago.
Did my first club ride yesterday, first long journey of over 200 km, and also being my first GS ride too. Quite a number of personal achievements done yesterday. Not knowing what to expect from the club members, I was pleasantly surprise yesterday by GS group I was with, that of being friendly, helpful, and just enjoying life riding their bikes.
It took me more than 5 years to decide to get myself a bike to ride, being very worried about the bike accidents as I got to see plenty of. In November of 2007, I finally made a decision to buy myself a bike and gear, and eventually settled on the BMW F650GS after a friend took me for a ride on his girl friend's F650GS. Actually, it was one of the 3 bikes (other was a Suziki and Kawasaki) I could sit on comfortably and without trying to reach the ground with my toes. Bikes in general are not designed for small people. Paid for my black F650GS in January, and did the Introductory course at BMW Rider Academy. Began riding my bike daily since February and loving her to bits.

Well lets say there will always going to have a difference of opinion between small and big persons when it comes to bikes.
Another reason why I joined the club is to be with a group of bikers in exploring South Africa and neighbouring countries too.

Hi there at last
Hi there
I'm JP Bezuidenhout, from Pretoria, and I share a 650 GS Dakar with my brother...
Have been a club member with my father Andre (Snr) for almost 2 years now, and finally got to join the forum.
I love GS riding and touring. Other passions include extreme sports, mountain biking and travelling (especially Africa)
Did GS Challenge 2007 at Loeriesfontein - what an experience. This year my brother Andre (Jnr) joined my dad for GS Challenge at Leydsdorp, while I had to work...
I am saving money to try and buy my own bike next year. First choice for me would be an 1150 Adventure with low mileage, but that seems to be quite a mission!
I love being part of the club and always enjoy the club evenings and GS outrides and all the great socialising with fellow bikers.
Looking forward to meeting more of you at the club
JP

Welcome to the forum JP.
Always good to see young men like yourself showing an interest in the BM brand and the club……we need you guys
And oh yes……don’t take nonsense from the “old toppies” over here
nah, just joking of course ……..there might be a few grey ones here but we sure aren’t scared to mix it with the young guns
please make yourself at home

Re: Tell us who you are?
Since Andre feels I should "spill the beans", here goes:
Hi, my name is Marnus Pieters and I like my bike
My motorbiking started around Std 8 with, if I can remember correctly, a 2nd hand Suzuki Ts 50 ER (which I got from my grandfather as a gift!). I went everywhere with it and literally rode it until it could go no more. I got to borrow dad's old bakkie half way through matric and the motorbike was sold as spares.
15 years later I bought a 2005 650GS Dakar from a colleague after realizing that one does not live forever - and seeing that my boy was 3 years old, mom said it's fine. (You see - most biking fatalities are the result of buying a bike without consultation!)
I've had the Dakar for about a year after which I came to conclusion that if I wanted to go touring anywhere outside Pretoria, I would need a bigger bike. Some trips with friends on their bigger bikes made that very obvious.
The guys at Bavarian was so kind to give me a good trade-in so I got my R1200GS. Funny how I now miss the Dakar when I'm off the road I guess one should have a big AND small bike!
I'm married and have a boy (turning 4 in January). My wife enjoys the occasional outing, but would never buy her own bike I live in Garsfontein, Pretoria and work in Centurion. Commuting with the bike means I'm never late due to traffic anymore!
Even though the average age of the general population of BMW enthusiasts is around 50 (? ), I believe that we all share the same passion for the machine and the experience. So I hope I can contribute as much as I expect to learn from all the old toppies I count myself lucky that I did not have to wait for some or another mid life crisis!
So that is about it in a nutshell. I'm always game for a ride - on or off the road (I can certainly do with some practice!), so let me know if you ever need some company outside the arranged rides.

Luckily there are a few youngsters joining the club to help lower that average from 50.

Re: Tell us who you are?
Hi Almal,
Ek is Christo Engelbrecht.
Het my eerste groot ongeluk so 2 jaar gelede gehad. Nadat 3 spesialiste my been wou afsit het die 4de my been gered.
'n 2009 spec K1200LT, 2008 R1200GSA en my projekfiets: 'n 1982 R100RS.
