The burst tyre and the broken collarbone...
Had a good trip to Plettenberg Bay from Friday to Tuesday (today) and then 10km from Bloemhof on the way back Wahl had a blowout to his back tyre causing him to lose control in a turn and end up down an embankment.
End result a broken right collarbone (same one he injured in March). Was transferred from Bloemhof Hospital to Klerksdorp this afternoon and will in all liklihood be transferred to Pretoria tomorrow where they will operate and put some pins in.
To me it looks like the tyre de-laminated (Anakee) and then the canvas burst later.
Being prepped by the Netcare people before being transferred to Klerksdorp
At this stage he was quite hot as he still had his riding jacket on and rainsuit - only way to remove them - cut them off!!
Lauren drove down to meet him in Klerksdorp and is with him at the moment.

Just glad to hear that he is ok. I,ve a concern with the anakee tyres, my front one had huge blisters and I had it replaced. Can give the details of the factory rep at Michelin if required.

Ai Wahl! Sorry to hear. I know exactly what it feels like. And I'm glad for you that they will rather operate and put in some plate & screws. You get mobile so much quicker. And if they don't operate and find out after 4 weeks that it didn't attach, they will operate in any case!
Funny that the Anakee would do this - normally a very dependable tyre. Well... now it's a good excuse to fit some TKCs And the rest of the bike?

Eish, not good to hear!
Get well soon Wahl, recover quick. It could have been so much worse, I am glad to see that you are relatively OK.
Another de laminating tyre? Just after everyone had a field day with the Heidies, and now an Anakee ???

Ooch!!!!! We are glad to see that you are ok, and at least smiling with all the right care around you. I have always said it is safer to ride in numbers to have support from each other when the going gets tough.
Wahl, speedy recovery and take it easy.

Re: The burst tyre and the broken collarbone...
Firstly , to Wahl, thankfully it was not worse than it is and best of luck with the recovery. What is of concern is that in our club over the last few months there have been a number incidents ranging from the most tragic to more minor incidents. Dave actually raised this at our last meeting and I can only endorse his sentiments, we cannot avoid accidental issues but we can do our best to ride in such a way that we can continue to enjoy what we do.
What is of further concern to me is that my Anakee 2 on the 1150 also delaminated in the same way as what happened to Wahl but Lynn felt the rubber come off as it happened and warned me so I stopped before the tyre burst. In fairness the tyre had 14000 km on it and was due for replacement but two incidents in two months , same brand and size, makes me think I will go back to the Metzeler. Perhaps we need to get some feedback fro Michelin on this?

Re: The burst tyre and the broken collarbone...
An update from Wahl. The doctor sent him for a scan of his back today.
He has compression fractures in verterbras T4, T5 and T6. T6 is the one of concern as it is unstable (think that is the term?).
He will be transferred to Eugene Marais Hospital on Thursday and will be going into high care and will be operated on to pin/fuse the vertebrae.
Lauren will let me know details regarding visiting etc..

Re: The burst tyre and the broken collarbone...
Wahl, what bad luck you having in the last few months. Hope a speedy recovery and you be back on your bike.
This is scary news about the problem with Anakee tyres. Will keep an eye on my front Anakee.
On my way to the lowveld Friday I had a suddenly rear tyre deflation at 130 km/h as a result of a long tensile wood screw going into my tyre just outside Bronkhorstspruit while I was riding in the fast lane. Luckily I managed to control my bike to come to a safe halt, after feeling the massive sudden shudder of the deflation. Only enjoy being stranded in the rain for 4 hours before being rescued by the AA via BMW road side assistance.

Re: The burst tyre and the broken collarbone...
Another update on Wahl from Lauren.
He is going in for surgery today (Friday) at 2pm so will not be available for visits for the rest of the day. Suggest you call the hospital first before going to visit if you planning to visit after today.
They will be operating on his shoulder and his back during the time in theatre. Will apparently be fusing vertebraes T2 - T8.
Keep him in your prayers for a successful operation.
