F800GS Recall?
I don't know if this is real (1 April, you know), and if this affects anyone locally, but probably worth finding out: I've stumbled across this on the Wilddog web site
BMW F800 GS RecallBMW has issued a recall for 2008 BMW F800 GS motorcycles for a problem with axle shaft wall thickness. Please read the details below.
Manufacturer: BMW of North America
Model Year: 2008
Models affected: F800 GS
NHTSA Campaign Number: 09V088000
Problem: BMW is recalling model year 2008 F800 GS motorcycles. The axle shaft wall thickness may not have been manufactured according to specifications. If the wall thickness was not sufficient, the axle shaft could deform and could break increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective Action: Dealers will inspect the axle shaft assembly and replace or repair the necessary components free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided an owner notification schedule. Owners may contact BMW
I would have thought the radiator hose would be a better reason

Was posted before the first op April
Spoke to the guys at Bavarian and not even the BMW-SA representative knew nothing about this . . . said they will get back to me - still not a word!
Well if it breaks, you can claim a new F800GS ;-) after you get out of hospital!
Just read on Wilddog that someone already had an off due to this - how true this is I cant say but it does scare me!

Re: F800GS Recall?
correction…….
I have managed to trace the alleged recall to a more legit source and it does indeed exist – even though it might only be a rumor. The guys in the US that phoned the 1-800 number even got a negative response. In SA nothing official has been released yet although rumors are flying thick and fast.

Re: F800GS Recall?
me thinks Motorad should issue us with new 2010 models next year with all the faults we picked up on our bikes that their guys could not

Re: F800GS Recall?
Scary.
Spoke to Simon, apparently not a rumour - he received notice via email from BMW stating that a recall on the front axle is imminent.
Thus far nothing on the BMW system registered against my frame number .. ermm my bike's frame number.
It's not to say my bike is definitely exempt from it - let's wait and see.
Seems like this one wouldn't even survive a neck chain, leave alone a cow chain...

Picked this up .... http://nhthqnwws111.odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/docservlet/Artemis/Public/Recalls/2009/V/RCDNN-09V088-1013.pdf
BMW's own words:]
"Model Year Model: 2008 F 800GS
Inclusive Dates of Manufacture: Sep. 11,2008 -Sep. 16,2008"
"The problem involves the front axle shaft..."
That's a pretty narrow range of manufacturing dates; and BMW's notice to NHTSA lists only manufacturing dates, not VIN. The headstock VIN label only reads by month/ year, e.g. "0908," so it seems the dealer will have to cross-check VIN against manufacturing date.
Still all working on rumor.
