CANOPY TOUR: 25 April - 2 May 2009
Hi All. Herewith the preliminary itinerary for the Canopy Tour:
Sat 25 April: Depart Atterbury Shell 7h30 for 08h00 and sleep in Kimberley 533km
Sun 26 April: Depart Kimberley and sleep Beaufort Wes 493km
Mon 27 April (Pub Holl): Depart Beaufort & sleep Wellinmgton via du Toitskloof 425km
pass (old road)
Tue 28 April (Leave): Depart Wellington and sleep Calitzdorp 325km
Lots of kuier along the route and opportunity for guys to
include the Agulhas-run
Wed 29 April (Leave): Depart Calitzdorp and sleep Stormsriver. This route 389km
includes visit and tour to Kango Caves
Thu 30 April (Leave): Canopy Zipline tour in the tops of the Tsitsikamma -
giants. Rest of day at leisure.
Fri 1 May (Pub Holl): Depart Stormsriver and sleep Aliwal North 740km
Sat 2 May: Depart Aliwal and arrive home 704km
For those who want the return can be done with an extra night arriving home on Sun 2 May. To be discussed.
This is a trip to be regarded as an annual holiday! There is no end to fun. Accommodation will be either B&B or camp, as you wish. The idea is to limit evening dines in restaurants as it becomes VERY expensive and rather arrange a communal lapabraai evenings at the campsites (where possible).
Next week I will include some pictures of the previous tour in 2008, just to wet your appetite!
Start booking your leave/sick leave. Only 3x official working days away from home. Let me know your interest.

Re: CANOPY TOUR: 25 April - 2 May 2009
Seams like a very nice ride - will speak to the Boss (Elsabe) - was planning a ride in that direction for March - might rather defer it for this ride. Will probably rather do the last stage spread over to days - dont like to do more than 500kms per day - a bit heavy on the pillion - regardless of the bike you ride.

Re: CANOPY TOUR: 25 April - 2 May 2009
I am also interested. Will talk to the missus. Agree with the <500km per day.
Re: CANOPY TOUR: 25 April - 2 May 2009
We have done roughly 80 000 odd kms on the LT (since 2004) - of which roughly 50% should be travelling on the open road, and we have tried doing more than 500km's on a day - did 880 in a day from Underburg around Lesotho to Bloem a few years ago. Not nice. Had to maintain a rolling speed of in excess of 140 and more to get to Bloem at a reasonable time. Given the roads and the continuous mountain passes in that area ???? - enough said.
Longer distances is a bit heavy on the pillion. The driver - is busy continuously, whilst the pillion is not. 2UP4ADV in a previous posting (2008) made a valid point - as long as your pillion is enjoying the ride and is happy, you will enjoy it likewise. So when planning a ride - either private or for the club - i tend to keep in mind what will be acceptable for Elsabe and the rest of the pillion riders - being ladies mostly.

Re: CANOPY TOUR: 25 April - 2 May 2009
It was stated clearly in the opening thread that it is a choice to extend the return journey with an extra day if the individual so prefer.
For maybe the majority it will be nice to have a resting day at home before starting work the following Monday. The road back is in any case quite boring and one would like to get it behing asap.
The +500km/day is a very personal one. On our return from Alexanderbay we covered 1018km on the penultimate day - and enjoyed every bit, although it was hard on the bum.
Rather look at the real fun we will have for the whole of the trip than to shadow the issue with a personal issue?

Re: CANOPY TOUR: 25 April - 2 May 2009
Alrighty then……..the reality……..
A bike trip to or from anywhere on the Cape coast is round about 1200km plus.
Bike trip – if main roads are primarily avoided.
If one does not do it in one go it will evidently requires two longish stretches of about 600/700/800km each depending on where you are coming from or going to.
The alternative to this is to travel over 3 days……….not such an attractive option especially coming home and also given the fact – as stated above – that at least the last 500km coming home from the Cape is nothing to write home about (read boring)

Will start working on the Boss shortly - at the rate of recovery that is now taking place - will work on her. Not riding much with the rain and having to work from home to stand her by. Who are the others - send PM if it is such a state secret.
