Can you add to the list of Passes in SA?

I did not see Montague pass (next to Outeniqua pass near George) in the Western Cape list, unless I missed it?

Nope, you are quite right. I had Outeniqua Pass on twice, one as "Dirt" and one as "Tar". I have corrected this now by replacing "Outeniqua Pass - Dirt" with "Montagu Pass".

The idea is to read the thread from the beginning But I remember at school I also tried to just read the summaries of our prescribed books but usually came second
But...back to the topic, I agree with Richard that it would be a useful addition to indicate paved or not. That way us roadies will not attempt the impossible

Yes - fully agree on this - dont want nasty surprises. Happened to me twice already - out on a long ride, deep into the mountains and all of a sudden the tar road disappears, whist it is marked on the GPS as a tar road. Not very nice and can cause serious trouble if your petrol planning cannot accommodate this change of affairs.

I now have the list up to 214 !!!!!!

That is excellent - might be a good idee in the trip planning of next year to add a mountain pass ride award as we now do with the gold and silver rides.

With regards to the Tar/Dirt issue, it is a bit difficult.

I have the following information on each of the passes on the list in Excel format:
Name
Co-ordinates
Province
Closest Town

I can add a column to indicate Tar/Dirt, no problem. I also have all the passes plotted on a Mapsource .gdb file. The problem is that it is not always clear from the GPS file if the road is a tar or a dirt road. I can add the passes that I know is Tar/Dirt, but that will not cover all the passes.

If anyone knows how to add a table to a post, then we can get all the info on the passes displayed, and members can add a post if they know if a pass is tar or dirt.

I actually gave them most of the info for those passes. I sent "LuckyStriker" my GPS file, and also posted it on the WD forum.

I will be doing some more work on this over the week-end, so by Monday we will have an updated list of passes.
