19 - 27 September - Train Tour to Cape Town
On behalf of Trip organiser Deon Mattheys:
Voorstel:
· Daar is twee tipes kompartemente, 4 persoon kompartement of 2 persoon Coupe.
· Motorfiets se tenk moet verkieslik net hal-vol wees.

Re: 19 - 27 September - Train Tour to Cape Town
Thanks for the provisional info.
What would be the cost including meals (including on the train), accommodation in Cape Town, and on the way back and petrol to travel back to Johannesburg?

Know where you are going to with this one - cost comparison would be interesting once one look at all the factors.

Re: 19 - 27 September - Train Tour to Cape Town
Hi Dave
I will try to answer as best I can. During our train trip last year, the most expensive item on the Menu for Dinner came to R45,00. Whilst the food on the Train is not gourmet restaurant quality it is perfectly acceptable and we certainly never suffered any nasty after effects.
Obviously I have outlined the current cost of the Train and in terms of addittional costs I expect that a budget of R500 per day, per person , is a reasonable expectation. This may vary slightly but this would include fuel, food, overnight at a bed and breakfast in the countryside of 3 star quality.
This assumption based on the following :
Fuel has been calculated at a consumption of 6.5 L per 100 at a price of R7.07 Per Litre ( 95 plus Octane)
Assuming a return journey of 1500 km I expect a cost of R700,00 at current fuel prices .
I expect that most of the bikes, even carrying a passenger and panniers will not exceed 6,5 L per 100?
The variation comes in when we stay in the more upmarket guest houses which makes the overnight cost higher. I have just done the Trip planning for my upcoming two points trip and the average overnight cost over the 12 days = R500 Per couple sharing. Obviously I will be able to comment on the quality of this type of guest house or B&B when I get home but my experience of these places has generally been positive.
Most of these B & B 'S include breakfast and I am sure that Club Members can give excellent feedback on restaurants in the countryside , from Cape Town all the way home.
In summary then , If we ride back to Gauteng from Cape Town over 5 days and nights , I cannot see the addittional expense totalling more than R2500,00 per person.
If there are members who disagree, or feel I have left something out, please let me know, your input is appreciated, this is after all your trip.
Indirect expenses like Insurance, Medical , etc. have not been considered in the budget.
Kind Regards,
Deon

Re: 19 - 27 September - Train Tour to Cape Town
Good Morning All
Quick update on the Train Tour
The following members have contacted me and expressed interest.
Nick Sendall
Henning & Jean Van Zyl
Abe & Sue Coetzee
Elaine Barkhuizen
Plus Lynn and I
9 Riders - 6 Bikes
Keep it coming !
I will be in touch with Shosholoza Meyl today in order to enquire about a block booking for a Tourist class coach.
Train departs JHB Station on Sunday Morning at 10h00. ( 20.09.2009) Saturday would have been better but I cannot alter the timetable.
Monday
Planning is still open to suggestions from all but once in Cape Town , ride to Hout Bay via Camps Bay for lunch at the Hout Bay Fishermans Harbour. Stay over in CT area on Monday Evening. Suggestions for overnight stay ?
Tuesday , Ride to Kommetjie,Scarborough, Simons Town, Fish Hoek ,Somerset West, Gordons Bay , Rooiels, Hermanus, Stanford, Napier, Bredasdorp, Struisbaai, Cape Agulhas.
Wednesday, Ride to n2 (Stormsvlei), Bonnivale, Robertson, join R62 at Montagu, Barrydale, Ronnies Sex Shop, Ladismith, Calitzdorp
Thursday- Continue with R62 to Oudtshoorn, De Rust, Meiringspoort, Beaufort West, 3 Sisters , Victoria West
Friday - Britstown, Strydenburg, Hopetown, Kimberley- visit the big hole, attached museum ,star of the west bar, lots to see.
Saturday - Final DAy - Boshoff, Hertzogville, Hoopstad , Bothaville, Viljoenskroon, Parys. From here everybody will take the best suited route home.
Total distance ridden will be in the region of 2000 kms. Overnight stops are planned so that there are no very long days - the final day from Kimberley is probably the longest.
We will not have a back -up vehicle with us. I am planning that a vehicle and trailer will be available to us to come fetch a stricken bike if required . I think it stands to reason that each rider's bike and tyres need to be good for a 2000 km trip.
Wednesday, 23.09 is a Public Holiday - the trip requires 4 days of leave.
I will be in touch with all the interested parties re the coach reservation. Also appreciate feedback from everyone that is interested re overnight stays.
Thanks and Regards
Deon

Re: 19 - 27 September - Train Tour to Cape Town

Re: 19 - 27 September - Train Tour to Cape Town
Louis - neem 4 tie downs saam - 2m in lengte ten minste.
