TOYRUN 30.11.2008
We all met at the Shell Atterbury before riding to Silverton
Geoff Bateman rode all the way from Witbank to ride with our club,
He will be coming to the next Noggin and joining our club
Briefing from Dave Swart before we left for Silverton Toy Run meeting point.
Richard rode his "mature" bike on the Toy Run this morning - only 33 000 original kms on the clock !
After riding almost to Nasrec, we made a U-turn just before Empire Road in Johannesburg and rode all the way back to the Western Bypass highway. Can someone please explain why ? If we had continued, we would have come to Nasrec. Perhaps someone can explain this. It was so hot, the traffic was so bad that we decided to stop alongside the highway !
Unfortunately a biker on a 800ST BM had an accident on his bike near 4 ways offramp. Perhaps someone can also explain what happened here.
Eventually we got to Nasrec - there were literally thousands of bikes
Saw some familiar faces - Mauritius from JB Tours came to say hello
Eventually found HALL 6 and put on Toys on the pile !
Was a great turnout by THOUSANDS of bikers, but was a bit of a mess having to turn back on our route and then get stuck in the traffic on the Western Bypass highway. I'm sure many people just went home. What a pity !

I heard our rideleader took the wrong road, should have stayed on the N1 but went onto the M1After riding almost to Nasrec, we made a U-turn just before Empire Road in Johannesburg and rode all the way back to the Western Bypass highway. I heard that it was a marshal and he was overtaking the merc when it moved over to the right and the bike went into his rear.
I saw a total of three accidents this one, one just before Nasrec where it seems that two bikes went into each other and then on my way home one just before Allandale, that one seemed quite serious scrape marks from the bike from the slow lane right over to the fast line and biker was lying very still....
Does anyone know about that one?

Re: TOYRUN 30.11.2008
Just arrived home from the Toy Run. Pity my battery died so no pics from me!
I did not see the accident at Allendale, might have been cleared up by the time we came through.
For my first toy run it was a fantastic experience, and definitely be doing it again next year too.

Re: TOYRUN 30.11.2008
nice pics "shorty"
thanks for sharing
definately a day to remember and not necessarily for the right reasons . Nevertheless, it was still for an exceptional cause
The ride lead took the wrong road??? ..........inexcusable…….and on top of that, when he/she realises the mistake, turned around instead of just carrying on.
Can not help to think if this perhaps did not trigger a series of unfortunate events

Thanks for the pics and the company, Mr P. Not sure if I want to remember the 2008 Toyrun.
Definitely not as well planned as previous years, although the end venue was the best.

Re: TOYRUN 30.11.2008
Went again this year after missing teh previous two. Have to agree with the comments on taking the wrong road, suppose the marshall didn't realise how close we were to Nasrec if we just continued?
Hopefully the marshalls will learn a lesson, i.e. know the route if you wan't to be a marshall, else yo ushouldn't be surprised if people ignore you ...
Worst traffic I had in a long time, ironic having just spent time in India with all the scooters roaming around there

Re: TOYRUN 30.11.2008
I was also a bit confused when we had to turn around that close to Nasrec. I then thought we went on this detour intentionally, you know, to rase awareness or something… It was my first toy run so I have nothing to compare it to, but I know it could have been better. The advantage of having the 2008 toy run as my first is, I am sure, it can only get better!!!
All the mishaps aside it was still a very memorable experience. Thank you to everyone (organisers and participants). This is one of the best charity events I am aware of.
