Re: Driving in the Yellow Lane - Right-hand side
Yes, one of the common problems with us bikers is that we forget how quick a bike is and of course cars don't realise this and sometimes take gaps that were'nt actually there When on a bike, always have all your senses active (including the 6th one) and always expect the worst when it comes to cars. Never trust that they will see you. Even if you are right, in an accident you always come off worst

I agree when it comes to normal overtaking.Andre wrote:It is totally irresponsible for a biker to pass on the left.
But the traffic on Gauteng freeways is NOT normal...!
I don't pass on the left. I merely drive in the left hand lane, obeying the "Keep Left, Pass Right" rule.
It is the people in cars queuing nose-to-tail one behind the other in the right hand lane that are passing me - going backwards!
I don't even have to exceed the speed limit to get somewhere.
I saw it again today.
My wife fetched me from the airport and on the way back, the right hand lane was absolutely clogged.
The left lane was wide open between the odd truck or two every kilometre or so.
I say "Keep left, you'll pass those on the right..."

I agree the left lane is faster than the right lane. Just dont be in a hurry, relax, you will get there in good time

Re: Driving in the Yellow Lane - Right-hand side
The left lane is definately a great lane to drive in - that is when there are no big trucks on the road. I do not particularly like passing a big truck in the traffic (call me bangat, it does not matter) so I tend to end up in the right hand lane most of the time.
The other problem with the left hand lane is that some people wait until the last minute before they swerve across the road to turn off the highway and then I do not like to be in their way if I can help it.
Which is the better lane? This is something that we have to decide every day, no two days are the same and no two roads are the same.
I find it best to remain "oop kop" and ride where I feel most comfortable. Sometimes on the right, sometimes on the left, but never in the emergency lanes.
