Stunt riders...?
I thought they were just trying to artificially extend the distance the front tyre will do before it needs to be changed...!
Interesting - doing wheelies right in front of the local AVBOB branch...!

Funny things, puddles - you know where the top is, but you never know where the bottom is...!
(Thinks: I must print a T-shirt that says: NEVER RIDE THROUGH PUDDLES - THEY MAY BE DEEPER THAN YOU THINK !)

Those were not the stunt riders.

Then they chose the right place to do the wheelies - no time wasted gettinge there then - did not see it when looking at the pictires the first time. Excellent observation.

Re: Rhino Rally Harrismith GS Trip
I know that there were some serious injuries at last year's Rhino. You could hear the bikes racing on the highway at four in the morning, and it was raining !!!!, I guess it IS true: "Brandewyn het nie brieke nie" - very sad indeed.

Re: Rhino Rally Harrismith GS Trip
And also, about 10min after I took these pics of the wheelies, one guy with no helmet and only a T-shirt lost it on a wheelie and fell over backwards, the bike went flying into the crowd and three people were injured very badly.
This is not nice too see at these events.
But I must also say that not all the guys popping wheelies and stoppies at the Rallies are the irresponsible types. There was even a guy on a 1200 Adventure popping a wheelie down Shenanigans Street !!!! - Most of the guys there do it in a controlled environment, and the others are just show-offs and cause the problems.
Like most things, I guess, there are the few that ruin it for the majority and give the whole biking community a bad name and reputation.

Re: Rhino Rally Harrismith GS Trip
Yes, unfortunately at every rally you have the irresponsible types, spoiling it for the majority just wanting to have a good time with fellow bikers. However, it should be put at the door of the organisers because there are rallies that are well controlled with designated areas for wheelies, stoppies and donuts. They are also the rallies where you never hear of any serious injuries. Happy biking

Re: Rhino Rally Harrismith GS Trip
Last year on the Rhino a few of us had a very nice ride and the rain was no problem at all.
Me, Brian Canoo, Enduro and our own Dave went for a nice lunch in Clarens. This included a nice ride through the Golden Gate park. I am going again this year (o yes and I am also doing the YEF). I am still working on Pauli and his better half, my son inlaw and daughter, Enduro will most probably go and I am sure Dave and Dot will also attend. One of my old friends and his son from my days of bike riding in the 1970's from Windhoek will be there.
Will try to arrange a run to Clarens again. This is a very nice rally when you have nice friends to share it with.

All good and well - would like to know how old Sharkie was when the picture on his profile was taken. Think the glasses are a bit out dated though.

mmmh!........now there is a the new topic for a nice debate in there........working on it.
Bottom line, a fairly large percentage of GS riders, do the odd gravel road now and then but the majority (or prefrence if you like) of riding is on tar. And why not.......or for that matter why?
Should be an interesting discussion............
ps. I use to be one of those GS riders .......before they kicked me out

Wow, great pics....thanks for posting it.
My philosophy exactly……what ever rocks your boat – en basta met die res do not like to be put in a box myself
Must admit, taking on the Swartberg on a superbike is pushing it a bit………maybe with the help of a few whiskeys……..who knows what the superbike might be capable of but I think I’ll give this one a pass

Re: Rhino Rally Harrismith GS Trip
Most bikes have been built for a purpose in mind. Superbikes, well for being super and offroad bikes for that purpose. Then someone decided they want to do both and the dual sport concept was born.
However if one goes back into history just a bit, you will find avid bikers on whatever machine, riding whichever road took their fancy. It is your bike so you make the rules. There is no one bike that can do it all, if they ever make that machine, it will sound the death knell for biking. No, the allure to what we do is that it takes people from every walk of life in every shape and size. Our bikes are an extension of that.
The more diversity the better!

Re: Rhino Rally Harrismith GS Trip
I agree. It will take too much PT to clean my bike again, (and don't mean the dirt!). I've done Swartberg Pass as well as Die Hel with a 650GS and a pillion, and that was pretty scary for a roady like me.MadnohB wrote:I think I’ll give this one a pass

Re: Rhino Rally Harrismith GS Trip
Do you need a 4x4 to do Swartberg Pass or can it be done in a normal car ? (from north to south) ?

Re: Rhino Rally Harrismith GS Trip
Swartberg Pass is fine for a normal car as long as you don't tow a caravan. Die Hel is quite something else. Have seen normal cars going down but I will not dream of it. In fact I don't think I will do it in a 4x4. The GS was scary enough!
