Sunday 10 Jan to Dullstroom Empty Sunday 10 Jan to Dullstroom

Post by tj 3rd January 2010, 19:50

The planning is for the S & GS groups to ride together via tar to Dullstroom, enjoy breakfast together and then the two groups split onto their own routes.

Breakfast at Dunkeld - to be confirmed

Leg stretcher at Middelburg - surprise!!

Departure, Atterbury Shell - 07h00 for 07h30

Ride Captain Drix Pretorius, seconded by Johan Maree

More info later

Sunday 10 Jan to Dullstroom Empty Re: Sunday 10 Jan to Dullstroom

Post by dakardrix 5th January 2010, 11:03

We had some second thoughts on this one, it will just be too tricky to make it work together, i.e. the GS riders returning afterwards on the gravel instead of before - quite a long trip so normally people lose interest and just want to get home fastest route.

We have therefore decided to stick to the trusted recipe and have separate rides towards Dullstroom, join up for brunch (as much as we can synchronise the time) and then people can ride home together or do their own thing (like geocaching, hehe)

Arrangements thus as follows:

Get together at Atterbury Shell -

S group 7am for 7:30 - led by Johan, with the leg stretcher in Middelburg.

GS group 6am for 6:30 - led by Drix. If dry the route is a level 1 to 2. If wet it obviously gets more trickier, but we have a lot of escape options towards the tar along the way. Goal is to enjoy, not suffer.

Aiming to be at Dunkeld Country Estate 11:00 - 11:30. Awaiting confirmation from them to cater for us, will be good to get an indication of how many are planning to join? I told them I expect no more than 30.

It will thus be similar to the Dullstroom ride last year - read more here:

Sounds good! Pity not being able to ride with the S’s, but understandably so. This is one of the longer trips. Maybe we can do this on another trip then?

Nice pic! Wink

Hi Drix

Are we going on any N roads? My son has a learner's licence and it would be nice if he can join us with his NXR125. Might slow down the pace though - top speed about 90 on tar. Would that be a problem?

Hi Mario, pretty much the same route as we did together last time.

Maybe you guys want to meet us in Cullinan Rayton at 7am to avoid the first bit of tar (N1/N4 until Hans Strydom) with the group (just a suggestion, nice to take him to the start to experience the vibe of the start - I remember I was nervous before my first ride with the club!)

But he's welcome, I'm sure if he rides as well as you he will put the bigger bikes to shame on the gravel! Very Happy

*sigh* me too. Flying down to Cape Town on Saturday to drive the car + family back.

@ Mario, don't worry about Jaco. He's catching up pretty quickly and he'll love the ride!

Oops, 7am in Rayton, not Cullinan (think it's the Total, the one on the right just before the railway line)

Still battling to get past reception, but our bookings at Dunkeld is confirmed for approx 35+ people. Buffet brunch is a bit pricey at R85, although they did say they will give us discount. I just can't find the person with authority to confirm how much.

Weather looks good for tomorrow, might even be quite warm. However, the Dullstroom area is known for quick changes, so make sure you have a warm and dry layer available, especially the GS's.

Sorry, can't get the price down for buffet brunch, R85 it is. Rolling Eyes

All I can say in justification is that last year was an awesome meal - cold+hot+coffee/juice. And good company in an awesome setting... tongue Cool

The Rayton Total in Treurnicht St - S25 44.743 E28 31.760

So to summarise, if someone got confused:

The GS guys get together from 6am at Shell Atterbury, leaving at 6:30. All tar, arrive in Rayton just after 7am at the Total. Fuel up those with small or empty tanks, drop tyre pressure. All off-road (with few small tar connections in between) to Loskop dam for next fuel stop. More off-road (..and the tar bits) to Dunkeld in Dullstroom, aiming to arrive between 11 and 11:30.

The S guys 7am for 7:30, totally different route to Dunkeld via Middelburg.

See you there, looks like a possible big group! Gonna be fun - for those who did the Dullstroom run last year in the winter, you won't believe how different, beautiful and lush the route is at the moment. cheers

ps. Still looking for a volunteer GS sweeper... alien
