Incase someone might be interested in joining, we are doing Kosi Bay this weekend but we are leaving Thursday morning to return on Saturday.

Friday 16/10 to Kosi Bay, down to Hluhluwe to Mkuze where we will overnight.
Saturday 17/10 back home to be in time for a matric farewell.
Total distance 1 461km
we will be on road bikes or S's so no gravel will be included.......not even a 1km air strip
Contact me for full detail if interested

Please be very carefull in that area for goats, cows, children etc, etc, etc running across the road.
Remember the Dave Swart rule, if the cow or bokkie's head is down ie.grazing, it is OK to pass. If not , approach with care or in your case on the K - just open up that throttle and leave them behind wondering what the bliksem just went past !
Enjoy !

Re: Kosi Bay 15 to 17 Oct
Just a suggestion:
The roadworks between Piet Retief and Pongola is VERY bad, with bad road conditions, and lots of stopping and waiting. Like this:
I suggest you take the road from Piet Retief to Vryheid via Paulpietersburg, then via Louwsburg up to the R66, then onto Pongola. Yes it is further, but the road is nice, with lost of twisties from Louwsburg down the escarpment
Map:
Even though this is about 120km further it only took us 15min longer.
If you really want to do the N2, you can take this short-cut (all tar) where you will miss a great deal of the roadworks.

Also note that the R69 between the R66 and the N2 is a dirt road, even though on Mapsource it looks like a tar road.

Shucks JR... and I still have to do Kosi Bay...
You guys must enjoy and enjoy it safely!
PS. I was thinking of doing my Kosi Bay trip trough Swaziland (and perhaps Moz)... but only dreaming at this stage...

Re: Kosi Bay 15 to 17 Oct
thank you so much Etienne, your input has been very helpful – especially the part about the R69 between the R66 and the N2.
I owe you a few cold ones for this
@ Etienne - are you positive the link back to the N2 from the R543 on your short-cut is tar?

the N2 is not really a must but we are coming back via Louwsburg and Vryheid.KnopKop wrote:If you really want to do the N2, you can take this short-cut (all tar) where you will miss a great deal of the roadworks.......
indeed no harm in riding that stretch of road twice.DaveS wrote:.....I think you know the Vryheid - Pongola road.

Yes 100%
It is a narrow, sometimes twisty tar road with no shoulder, but the surface is good. We did this road on the way back from the Kosi Bay GS trip in August. When we filled up in Pongola a guy on a Fazer told us about this detour. He rode with us all the way from Pongola to Piet Retief. So the road is roadbike friendly.
You can see him in the picture between me and the robot.
