Aftermarket Exhaust Empty Aftermarket Exhaust

Post by Wahl 2nd September 2008, 22:03

I had a new aftermarket exhaust fitted to my bike this afternoon. I am not very technical so please bear with me.

The complete exhaust system was replaced - making it a freeflow system, at a fraction of the price you generally would pay. Less than half I believe.

You could even pay less apparently if you use the standard BMW exhaust - it just gets modified.

I am smiling and can not stop smiling, on my way home I opened up a bit to get past a car and when I looked again I was doing 150.

The complete job took around 30 minutes.

Very impressed

Aftermarket Exhaust Empty Re: Aftermarket Exhaust

Post by Andre 4th September 2008, 06:59

I have been playing with the idea of an aftermarket can for the RT but I am in two minds. I like the extra power but I am not into noisy touring bikes. I like the Two Brothers pipe but not sure how loud it would be. I don't want to develop a headache on long trips. Anyone with a RT fitted with a Two Brothers that can give me feedback Question

Aftermarket Exhaust Empty Re: Aftermarket Exhaust

Post by LeRoy Olivier 4th September 2008, 08:33

This is a slippery slope as there is reasoning behind a bike that annouces itself - makes the cage pilots aware of the bike behind/around them. Dont want to tread on toes again, but certain Beemers are best left as they have been designed and built.

I believe the Beemer engineers designed these models with quite and elegance in mind, hence the quite exhaust pipe systems. As far as i am concerned the RT is one of these models, Andre - keep your bike standard, it sounds good enough as it is, and i believe you get ebough performance out of it.

Regards and see you Sunday at Millies.

not if you choose the right system. Can be as quiet as you like in cruising mode, I would say exactly like the stock can. The huge difference is under acceleration.

LeRoy Olivier wrote:........I believe the Beemer engineers designed these models with quite and elegance in mind, hence the quite exhaust pipe systems......

all stock bikes - no matter which brand - are quiet. Their first objective in the design is to meet the very strict statutory noise and emission requirements especially in Europe

Then this should be applied stricter here - then perhaps the Harleys will not be so ????????? iritatingly noisy. Jamies Honda and S has a very nice sound to it but those Harleys - cant understand why a sane person would buy them.

Aftermarket Exhaust Empty Re: Aftermarket Exhaust

Post by Tony R 4th September 2008, 09:26

I have a two brothers pipe fitted to my Sprint ST. It is a great pipe but can become a bit tiring on longer trips. It crackles and pops on over run and backfires beautifully which has given a few people a fright when they are close behind me. It saved around 9kg in weight compared to the standard pipe and opened the wheel arch up very nicely. If I am able to offload the Sprint and Kawasaki and I purchase an RT I would not change the pipe for anything noisy. With the wind noise which is high on the Arai helmet and the exhaust noise of the two bros long trips can become a bit mind numbing.

no different here. Not including Harleys, you can not buy a loud new bike from the official agents. Market forces, in other words we the buying public, on the other hand ensure a very healthy so-called after market in pipes and cans. In Europe it’s common practise to change the exhaust and then annually – or whatever the frequency is – change back to stock for the roadworthy inspection. Next day back to aftermarket again.

This has not escape the bean counters of big brand motorcycle manufacturers either…..they want in on the cut. You can now order a BMW directly from the factory with a Laser or Akrapovic can on…..fully factory approved, but………it’s regarded as an optional extra (no surprise here either) and no credit is given for the stock can that you don’t buy. On the K1200S the stock can is going for about R14k locally

As for Harleys – big bucks are spend for those straight, without silencer, without cat, Screaming Eagle pipes…..again market forces.

The full system Akrapovic on my BM is surprisingly quiet if you are “rustig” and in cruising mode. No problem on the ears during a long trip whatsoever. Just don’t let the wrist roam free…….then the inner beast awakes and bystanders go to “stand on attention” without a command. The Honda with still it’s stock can, sounds like nothing but I have not found a replacement to my liking yet.

The last and very interesting point…….a bike with a louder sound, is ridden in a completely different manner by it’s rider in comparison to the stock bike.

For the record, what prompted me initially to change was not sound……it was that ugly, huge, oversize water pipe the bike has for a stock can. As an added bonus, 11kg was lost by replacing it for a full system Akra. Not the case with the Honda with reference to looks.

Having said that........boy oh boy that sound you get with the packege is like music.....and very addictive Very Happy

for those interested, I have a video clip available of the sound under full acceleration

well the degrading part is a matter of opinion isn't it?........maybe the neighbour also wants to do with his bike what what he likes, so why criticize

changing the exhaust is not necessarily limited to superbikes. As for the BM and superbike connection.........min dae......the S1000RR is coming.......a true blue blood superbike Wink

no biggie……

Unintentionally we have actually just illustrated one of the beauties of this club namely an environment in which everyone are afforded the room to do as he/she pleases (within limits of course) without fear of criticism or “agteraf” talk…..and I personally sincerely hope, it will remain that way.

Not quite sure what is meant here? Is the BMW system called a "quite" system or do you mean "quiet" as in does not make a noise?

Have to agree on the Akro in cruising mode - you hardly hear it - even at 150/160. Apart from the performance because of weight loss when replacing the original can, there is a couple of extra hp you get and the throttle response is definitively a bit more lively - and then with the cat removed I believe even more so - right Wahl?? Whether putting on an aftermarket exhaust is 'degrading' any bike is a matter of personal opinion. Many would not agree with that sentiment! Evil or Very Mad
