Language Medium for Club Meetings? - Page 2 Empty Re: Language Medium for Club Meetings?

I don’t have a problem with the use of either Afrikaans or English and or both. Others might feel stronger about the subject which must be respected

Let us just be mindful not to overcomplicate things and in the process remember what we are doing here in the first place namely social interaction/relaxation/enjoyment. Not exactly “International Incident” material if we are not all on the same page at the same time.

Sure it is courteous to take a non-understanding member into account when conveying a message.......by the same token, it is also courteous to allow someone to communicate in the language of choice – in many a case, the very drawing factor to a certain club or group ie. culture/language/general harmony/friends etc. Some just find it easier to express (exactly what they want to) in their mother tongue. A good example is an Afrikaans joke as part of a presentation which simply cannot be translated without losing the “punch line” and vice versa. Of course it would be pointless to do your thing if NO ONE in the audience understands the language Language Medium for Club Meetings? - Page 2 Icon_wink

From a personal point of view I think the present system of allowing ride feedbacks in the language of choice while using English for important announcements and the overhead is working pretty well. Bruno’s point in so far as ride specific detail is taken. It is important that all on a ride understand and note the details regarding that ride.

Let us not make too many formal policies and directives regarding when and when not to speak in a certain language, be polite and let’s share the ride.......which is anyway an "International language" all by itself

Thanx for all the input - As JR points out - it's all about sharing the ride.

Must admit i also regard the LT as being of the female gender - Mud-Pooh-Bah's take on it refers, as well as the cost factor involved here - we just continue to spend - high maintenance.
