Unreal. Only a BMW could achieve that, my Triumph only got to 23 000 before the bearings went.

qiute an achievement Colin
mmmh ja......weet nie so lekker nie.......
The 1150 yes - and even before- they are pretty much bullet proof and to an extend we are riding on the back of that reliability. As for the current generation Beemers (or for that matter any brand) with all the electronic gizmos..........??? The really high mileage "new" bikes are few and far between and you can be sure even they did not arrive at those type of mileage with (serious) problems

Re: Colin's Bike achieved the 100.000 Km !
Yes been some interesting discussions on forums about Triumph long term reliability. I think the old Triumphs whilst oil leakers probably lasted longer. My bike appears to have had problems with either rings or a sudden honing of one of the bores of one piston which resulted in a massive oil usage in about 600km's of riding. I am a fanatic about my bike and check oil all the time. It was checked at 22 600 and was fine and then ran big end bearings at 23 300. Pictures I saw of the engine indicated that it had been burning oil badly. Looked like a coked up two stroke. I saw pictures that a mate of mine took of a CBX honda motor that had done over 60 000 and it was clean. Looked like a new engine. Our business is not doing well at the moment so I had serviced the bike at a non franchised facility to reduce costs and that caused a bit of consternation with Triumph in the UK. I think that once they had seen the photos and got the report they agreed that it was not good and that in the interests of the brand they would pay. I had to pay for labour. I now have the onerous job of running in the motor again. I am then not sure what to do. Would like to ride a GS but finances are on the brink of bankruptcy so that is not an option at the moment. Will just check oil every 100 km or so for a while to make sure that it is not doing the same thing. Oh well at least I have the bike back and am so happy to be riding again. It is amazing how you miss the riding when it is not there. Will not take it for granted again.

Re: Colin's Bike achieved the 100.000 Km !
I once saw the engine of a Pretoria City Council K75 that was in for a major rebuild. Running my finger down the nikasil cylinder bores I could not feel the slightest of wear ridges...at 292 000kms!
They only changed big-end bearings (because they could!) and put it back together again. That bike is still riding about today !
I read of an R100RT in New Zealand that has done over 500 000...
...miles - on the same engine and gearbox, with only owner-based mechanical care.

My Dakar did 60,000 in 18 months (before I sold it this year, big mistake) - curious to know how long it could go. Felt like it was barely run in.

Re: Colin's Bike achieved the 100.000 Km !
Well done Colin.
I would be interested to get the service history of that bike.
Have you have any major breakdowns, repairs.?
How many sets of tyres have you been through.?
This is a great advert for the reliability of the 1150 motor.
Not sure if the 1200 motor is as reliable.
I always got rid of my bikes at about 25 000 - 30 000kms.Looks like there is still a lot more life in them !

Re: Colin's Bike achieved the 100.000 Km !
Had a look through service history which shows a service every 10000km and no problems with the engine. Had a clutch change at 60000 which had a lot to do with the type of riding the bike has done for example all the Gs challeges 13 red and 2 orange routes etc etc. Also had a rear shaft bearing go while doing the Cape Epic cycle race with a camera man as pillion. For the rest as Dakardrix says 'Felt like it was barely run in'

Johann Strauss's RT has clicked over 140k so far! - With minimal mechanical defects in the process.
Geluk Colin! En lekker om dit saam jou GS pelle te kon deel!
Ek werk hard aan my RT se km's, nou 65k na 22 maande...

Re: Colin's Bike achieved the 100.000 Km !
One common denominator so far……..all pre 1200 era bikes.
Would be interesting to hear from someone with a 1200 or a 2004 onwards model with 100k or close to that.

Re: Colin's Bike achieved the 100.000 Km !
Ok maybe i'm very stupig here, but bear with me as this is my first bike!! Why do people trade their bikes on such low km?? I want to buy a bigger bike soon but will never be able to sell my current one. Will ride her untill I cant ride no more.
All my cars I rode untill they had +- 500000km on the clock. Yes by that time they were worthless, but I got my moneys worth.
I look after my vehicles and service them regurlaly(sp). As soon as my garantee is over I service them myself.
I just see a trend by bike owners to trade much quicker. I dont understand why
Sorry about the hijack and congratulations Collin

Re: Colin's Bike achieved the 100.000 Km !
From my side, after owning a 1150GS Mandarin,1150GS Sunshine Yellow,1150RT, K1200S and 1200GS Adventure. The reason for changing bikes so often is :
1.to get the newer model - 1150GS had assisted servo braking.
2.try new bikes - what a change from a 1150GS to a 1150RT then to the K1200S(still the best bike I have owned, but the 1200GS the best tourer)Also gives one a better understanding of each bike.
3.the fear of no more factory warranty - BMW repairs can be very expensive.Although I have faith in the product,I can not afford huge repairs once the factory guarantee is over.
I could only ever afford 1 bike at a time and therefore have tried many models .My ideal garage would have a 1200GS Adventure and a K1300S in it.The K for Sunday morning runs and the Adventure for long trips - need to do more of them.

Re: Colin's Bike achieved the 100.000 Km !
Personally speaking i tend to agree with Henk - only traded the first LT on 95 000km's. Walked into Bavaria at the wrong time with the wrong friend - who was buying a GT at that point in time.
To while away the time - spoke to Braam to get general information on the LT/Trade In/New Bike - lo and behold before i knew it the deal was done and the new bike was ordered. Would probably still be riding the old LT now.
Now - seeing as the LT has been discontinued - will probably ride it till the clock ticks over, or the wheels fall off.
