The forum........which forum
With great sadness we are noting the death of the forum. In the very young age of 1 year, 3 days and 20 hours it faded away to a silent end.
The good news is, it will go unnoticed………

Why don't we do something about it?
Like what? You may ask.
A lot of trips. A lot of trip reports. A lot of questions. A lot of good advice.

Re: The forum........which forum

Re: The forum........which forum
I am not sure what the exact function this forum was intended to have. As a club medium to share information, it is very successful. I do not equate busy with successful. In this instance I believe keeping us all connected is the key.
I participate in only one other forum as I am trying to cut down. That one is not club based and is something for all DS enthusiasts. It is very busy and if you are off a day or two, you can miss whole pages of threads. The down side is it is very specific to DS biking. That is not a problem for me as that is where my passion lies.
Usually when I am online I am looking for specific DS knowledge, the other forum is dedicated to that, so that is where I go.
This forum is more dedicated to the club and if I want to know anything club related I come here. For this forum to transcend its current position as a club based one, a number of things have to happen. Things like more non member, members (if that makes sense), a much more informative experience as it relates to the specific bikes, a more general appeal other than just BMW's. To mention but a few.
So that brings me back to my original point, what is the purpose of the forum? Answering that, will either lead the direction to where the forum needs to go, or illustrate its success at what it was intended for.

Re: The forum........which forum
The club’s home page contains all the important info to keep members informed about club related matters and is one way communication.
On the other hand, any forum by nature is interactive or if you like user-generated
Choose any reason or function for the forum you are comfortable with…….a forum without interaction/movement will die just like our previous forum died as a result of the very same reason

Re: The forum........which forum
I agree and I disagree. Although this is labeled as a forum I have always viewed it more as an interactive club site. A forum usually has a specific claim to fame, an identity if you will. My personal feeling is, that any forum that does not develop that, dies.
So perhaps I did not ask my question correctly. What is the identity of this forum? Answering that may just help us in averting the death of the forum.

It is just a quiet phase. The forum is taking a breather in the bush but will keep going. It is one of the best in the forum business.

Must admit - i agree with Jamie - seems there was a bit of a slow spell on the forum. Given the number of answers anbd views from last night when the post was done - obviously the forum is still being read widely - although it seems not all is participating. Why?????

Re: The forum........which forum
I think this year in particular is quite stressful for people. Firstly I have very little time to spend on the forums - Wild Dogs is great, but just too much stuff, lot of it a waste of time, lots of it brilliant.
But here is where I would like to see more and read more real stuff. The way this year is going for me I just sometimes, ok a lot of times, wants to sit and do nothing. Reading without participating, even for a few minutes, is good for my soul.
Let's relax, it will happen in due time. I also get a bit disheartened when I post a ride report and it looks like most ignore it, but what the heck, I'm sure someone's having a chuckle here and there.
Tx to the regulars keeping it alive, especially Dani! I'll try and be more regular.
Now, if another biker buddy comes charging up me exhaust again in peak traffic, I'm gonna start taking biking mirrors off! I AM BUSY LOOKING FOR A GAP!
Glad I could get that out of the system...

Jamie
Ons klublede ry motofiets op naweke . Hulle sit nie by hulle rekenaars nie. Jy sien jy kry drie tipes mense:

Re: The forum........which forum
Ja OK OK,
Ek sal ook bietjie "in-chip"
I think the "base" of the forum is very small, what I mean is that it only really serves the members of the club. I realise that non-club members also visit the forum from time to time and give their input and views, but it is mostly a "club-thing"
Forums like WildDogs, AdvRider and UKGSer, has been around for a while and do not only focus on bike-related stuff, boards like "Jou MA" on WildDogs has NOTHING to with bikes, but is basically a "k@k praat" section with everything from Religion & Politics to "Show us your wife/partner" to Pics of hot wimmin. Those boards are VERY busy and add alot of traffic to the forum.
Also those forums have thousands of members, we only have 184 of which only 20 have more than 100 posts.
As Morpheus said, some of the other forums are too big, you miss so much if you are not online daily. I also agree with Drix, that many people read but don’t post.

juis te meer!!!
If we want it to survive, we need to feed it. Without interaction there will be no forum and that is proven history.
Low activity unfortunately creates a “bose spiraal” …….hypothetically……
I have not been on the forum for 3 weeks and there are only 5 new posts made since my last visit. Also, there was no reaction to the ride report I made 2 weeks ago…..The ones that made the 5 posts might start to think, why bother and eventually they stop posting. No we are only sitting with the “readers” of which we have a rather big percentage here. They in turn think, I’m not the “posting” type but I enjoy reading everyone else’s input but now all of a sudden there is nothing new to read for the last 3 weeks so I might as well stop reading.
The once in a week(or two weeks) visitor soon realizes it's a waste of time as there is no activity here….I’ll just go to the club’s home page and get all the info I need there…….and so on and so on………
Obviously, this whole plea is only if we want the forum to exist….if we don’t, it’s easy……just stop posting and see how quickly it will die
having said all this.......judging from the reaction to this post, I'm less and less worried.......we have even managed to get the Chairman out of hiding

Wouldn't this get the guys off their bums and fingers tickling?
No please not. I like it if we stick to bikes & riding and everything that goes with.... OK OK hot wimmin & bikes do go hand in hand!?!
Like a Gemmerkat on a ST??
Jokes aside. You okes that are active on the forum, please do so more without stopping. If you look at the 'views' compared to the 'posts' then the evidence is there that the 'gosts' enjoy our forum, without showing themselves. You guys have no idea what contribution you actually make to the bike fraternity.
And what's wrong with a good difference of opinion without getting personal. (Exhaust noises in the past??)

Re: The forum........which forum
I reckon its a balance between getting visits to the forum vs the club's homepage. If the info was moved to threads rather than being put on the homepage, peeps would be 'forced' to use the forum rather than just pulling info from the club-page. Not saying the current arrangement is wrong though ...
