Re: Elsabe isn't feeling well
Thoughts and prayers for a rapid and safe recovery, Elsabe !
The reasons why laparoscopic procedures were developed was to improve recovery rate, reduce stay in hospital and thereby the risk of (hospital-acquired) nosocomial infection.
Worldwide, nosocomial infection risk is about 10%. It seems that MedAids are still happy to take the risk and pay for the longer stay (If the 10% the infection does set in, then they pay that too.) But that doesn't take into account 'pyn en lyding', scarring, etc.
I had a devil of a fight persuading my MedAid's "agent" PPN that I can't drive a motorcycle or a car with multifocals - all they would pay for.
(I need three focal lengths and eventually persuaded them that a bifocal with readers could work.)
MedAid administrations are a real pain and seem like penny pinchers. But if I needed a triple bypass, I'd be glad that I had someone to stand in for the account and not have to put up R200K+ cash deposit before they operate...!

Re: Elsabe isn't feeling well
Yes - medidal aids are a pain in the but - their take on new developments is somewhat outdated though. Elsabe was discharged yesterday after only one day in the ICU (R7300.00 per day and not the initial R3000 per day), 3 days in the wards at R1900. Only 4 days in the hospital.
Had we done the open procedue it would have been 6 days in ICU and 14 days in the wards. With all the scarring and pyn and lyding. the cost difference in favour of the more expensive laparoscopic procedure is R63 000.00 - in other words we have saved the medical amount R63 000.00 by insisting on said procedure.
Regardless - she is now at home and recovering and with much less pain and discomfort that would otherwise have been the case.

Re: Elsabe isn't feeling well
Dave - Turns to tight for the LT - going to take a few Lunchbars to repair the friendship. - i have yet to see a turn that is to tight for the LT. You did not accompany us into Lesotho - scraped the foortpegs on most corners or very nearly.
As mentioned we have done most of the roads you will be doing around Lesotho - cannot emphasize enough that those roads are very near to bikers heaven.

Re: Elsabe isn't feeling well
Hi Sue - Elsabe is recovering remarcably well and is fast on her way to full recovery. The tumor has been removed completely and the test were negative, in other words the tumor was benign - not cancerous.
Will however still be quite a while before we can ride again and again join the club festivities. Regards and ride safe.
