Elsabe isn't feeling well

It's never nice to tell about hospitals, illnesses and friends not feeling well.
But this is to inform you that Elsabe Olivier is awaiting surgical treatment.

Thank you for all the best whishes - will convey it to Elsabe. She has been diagnosed with a condition that is known as a Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumour (GIST), that develops in the stomach wall between the 2 muscle layers of the stomach. It has to be surgically removed with a 2 week stint in the hospital and 6 week recovery period at home. So we wont be attending any club functions and rides until she has recoverred fully.

Anybody wanting to get updates on this and share in the process - register as follower on the blog - you will have to register a Google Account (Cost Free) for you to be able to do so. We will be using the blog as a medium to update all friends and family in this regard.

Thank you for all the well wishes. It is sorely needed. Up to the very last minute it was an ongoing fight with the medical aid to pay for the better procedure - namely the laprascopical procedure versus the open stomach procedure. With the open procedure cutting through all of the muscles directly into the stomach cavity. Obviously much more intrusive and musch more painfull for the patient but less expensive for the medical aid.

To make a long story short - Key Health - is still only paying for the open procedure - the difference of R15 to R20 000.00 we have to carry. Lesson learnt out of this - (1) The medical aids are a bunch of sharks - with the balance sheet the ultimate determining factor, (2)Make very sure of what your medical aid will be paying for at the end.

I’m stunned……….

As a layman I would have thought the “total procedure” would be cheaper laparoscopic with surely a shorter time in ICU, less chance for infection, no wound treatment required etc

Is Key Health part of Bonitas (or vice versa)?

Be it as it may, we wish her (and you) all the best for the op. Is it still going ahead as scheduled?

Hulle sal egter slegs goedkeuring verleen vir 'n oop prosedure (wat die dokter nie wil doen nie, want die ligging is nie goed nie.) Die mediese fonds vra dat die operasie uitgestel word."

Ek is jammer ek hoor nou eers die nuus. Sterkte Elsabe en LeRoy. Hoop jy voel gou beter na die groot op. Laat weet asb as ons kan help.

Elsabe eventually only stayed in ICU for 1 day - versus 6 days that the open procedure would have needed for recovery (R3000 @ day - do the maths). She is already well on her way to recovery and asked for her phone yesterday - so you can send sms to her - 082 325 0283.

Seems she will require less than the normal 14 days for recovery before she can be discharged. All extra motivation for my upcoming fight with the medical aid on this - one wonders what Carte Blance will have to say about this.
