Personally I feel any member of a group that would like to take a solo during the course of the organised ride/time should inform the group leader of such an intention and also the intended route to be taken. Then the backup can be available in case of a distress or non-return at a reasonable time.

Usually, if a member on a club ride leaves the group on a solo ride, he does so at his own risk. The backup vehicle is then technically not available for him. The driver of the backup vehicle is compensated by the club for his services to be available for the group on the route they are travelling. Any deviation from this will cause the driver to incur additional cost and could also cause delays for the group. Obviously discretion would be used if a solo rider encounters a problem.

On the recce I did on the Saturday - 400 odd km in a different direction to where the group was, it would have been unreasonable of me to expect the backup vehicle to assist me if I encountered a problem. This I was fully aware of and if I had encountered any problems would have resolved it with local area assistance or BMW on call.

Anyone leaving a group during a group ride needs to understand that the backup vehicle is only available for the group on the route that the group is travelling.

You are all right - tend to agree with Renier on the points he made with regards to the difficulty of the road and the non-existant margin of error. Prior to leaving for Fouriesburg on Friday - i gave the full briefing, and iterated the ramifications of leaving the group and going solo.

He was on his own here and he knew it. The sanctity and safety of the group would at all times have been put first. The need for a search for an "accident victim" would only have become imminent once we reached FCI and the rider was not already there.
