Could someone explain to me the use of the "map tool" on MapSource. The only thing I can do with it is to make different coloured blocks.

When would I want to use it and why?

I think you use the map tool to select what maps you want to copy/transfer to your GPS unit.

I am not 100% sure either.

Yes Sharkie. That is correct. If your GPS unit has limited memory space you select a certain area on your pc with the maptool and then send those selected maps to your GPS.
It is however convenient to buy a say 2Gig card and copy all onto your unit, one time.
Short Pauli is the expert here and he taught me this.

So you would use it once to copy the maps and not again ?

Yes - you can keep all the maps selected on your pc.
