Ode to my (your) bike
Very often people refer to their bike(s) in an affectionate way……and sometimes in a robust way – after all, bikers are perceived to be strong hard people. Thought it would be interesting to hear what members have to say about their bike in a few words….a sort of lyrical verse……soppy or butch, good or bad.
I’ll start……..
To the skeptics and the next door neighbour, you are a dangerous mechanical object, a piece of noisy metal – albeit a shiny and beautiful one – but to me, you are alive with a character all of your own……… a lover and best friend. Definitely not simply a mode of transport…….much rather a soul mate.
Your acceleration and behaviour when I caress you around corners, provide pure orgasmic enjoyment to me. We communicate a lot, me and you…..and you very seldom complain. You react to the slightest input from me and even when I’m overeager, you will remain forgiving.
You have taken me to places I’ve never been to before and together we have explored some remote areas. You let me experience velocity I could never even have imagined….those type that will cost millions to reproduce on 4 wheels and a sense of freedom I am yet to match elsewhere. When I take the liberty of putting a pillion on you, you embrace them as if it was me.
You and me, my trusted friend, we have an affair and we make a great team.
Let’s hear what you have to say………..

Re: Ode to my (your) bike
I think it is an excellent post - as we all bought our respective bikes with a specific goal in mind, with a certain aspect of the model that we chose appealing to a specific need iro what we want in a bike and what we want to do with it.
I think this thread will get a lot of responces. Here goes my 10c worth. In 2004 i initially bought a R1100S from a friend and was hooked on the sheer power of the bike and magnificent roadholding that the bike had/has. Unfrtunately the pleasure was shortlived as the affirmative shoppers one night decided that they would rather take posession of my pride and joy. As i communte daily with the bike and needed packing space i then shopped around for something more suitable to my daily luggage carrying needs.
Lo and behold the first LT beckoned. That was before Bruce/Bavaria's new showroom opened. The comfort of the LT was immediately felt, especially by Elsabe as she now had this lovely comfortable chair on the bike and backrest against which she could sit. The LT might not have the kick in the but power that the other models in the Beemer product range has but we can very comfortably tour for hours on end at relatively high speeds.
The weight and size of the bike is normally a deterant, but after doing 55 000kms on the first LT and now having done 14 000kms on the new LT, i can safely say that, that becomes irrelevant once the wheels start rolling as the weight and balance of the bike is of such a nature that you can flip the LT from footpeg to footpeg in any given situation without thinking of it, with little or no effort at all. In my book this is the best luxury tourer on the road.

Re: Ode to my (your) bike
Ditto to LeRoy's last two paragraphs. To those who frequently ride with a pillion will know that the pleasure of any ride depends solely on the comfort of your pillion - keep her comfortable and every ride becomes a pleasure - and this bike delivers!
The LT handles better than it looks and it is why we still continue in our pursuit to ride as many of the passes in southern Africa as we can, including dirt passes within reason, as it is more than capable of staying with most other bikes. The down side of the bike is the wheelbase is too long and ground clearance when loaded is too low leading to the occassional bottoming out on rouugh roads / high speed bumps.
The only reason for me to swop to another bike will be when / if BMW launches a new model LT and then we will ahve to wait and see.

Re: Ode to my (your) bike
My RT is my touring companion, the one that makes long distance a pleasure and through her solid engineering keeps me safe even when I sometimes make a mistake. She is very forgiving and never complains, no matter how hard (or soft) I ride her or heavy I load her. She has never let me down and she takes me places I would never have gone if it were not for her. She changed my life and will always have a special place in my heart

Back in the 60s & 70s at school they thought us any thing with a drive shaft (bakkies etc.) or a disselboom like a donkiekar is a HE. Now why does everyone call his BM a she?

Not sure about the translation but it roughly means "if you are full, you are full, and bound to overflow where-ever it can find a weak spot"

OK let me try again. When you are full of love for something (or someone) it will find a way to come out in the form of words of affection, because you can't keep it in

Re: Ode to my (your) bike
Mine is Bullet and the GT is a He.
Bullet: If you ride standing on the pegs looking over the screen, the bike looks just like a bullet.
He: When I think about a SHE, I think of something that is pretty, friendly, full of compassion and loving. I need to treat a She with respect, look after her and she will look after me.
Hell, maybe Bullet is a She
