Dave - we must now both be very carefull here - have stepped into a veritable minefield here - the diiminutive form here actually referred to the female derivative of Rooikat.

Ah! I always understood the diminutive to mean smaller that the original.
eg appel and the diminutive appeltjie to be a small apple?
Did not realise it also meant male and female apple!

I reckon you are right, but language is not my strong point
Back to the topic; I rather enjoy people with nicks (even though I don't use one), it tells a bit about the person, their hobby, what they look like etc
