HP2 Sport
"FLOAT like a butterfly, sting like a bee." Muhammad Ali's quote is apt for BMW's bold Boxer, the HP2 Sport.
BMW's HP2 range is an exquisite collection of high performance, two-cylinder boxer bikes.
And the HP2 Sport is the latest model to seduce us with a quality that spans from its conception to design to an impressive ability to perform.
There are lashings of carbon fibre, lightweight wheels and a gorgeous MotoGP-styled dash. If you want to ride poetry in motion, this is it.
The 1,170cc flat twin engine has been reworked for a sports bike.
Tech spec
BMW HP2 Sport
ENGINE: 1,170cc flat twin
POWER: 128bhp @ 8,750rpm
TORQUE: 84.8 lb ft @ 6,000rpm
TRANSMISSION: six-speed, shaft
DRY WEIGHT: 392lb
FUEL: 3.5gal
The modifications improve the performance - peak power is up to a claimed 128bhp with 84.8lb.ft of torque - and ensure the cylinders don't protrude much, so there's maximum ground clearance on a track.
The punch is immediate, from every part of the rev range, a calculated, definite knock-out blow.
The surge is smooth, predictable and utterly, utterly addictive.
Like Ali, this bike is surprisingly agile. BMW's Telelever and Paralever suspension systems are Marmite-mechanics - you love them or hate them.

But with the rear's shaft-driven, single sided swingarm unit, handling is bang on.
Slicing through country roads, the Sport flicked from side to side with grace and elegance.
But there are compromises.
The steering lock is limited, so you could find yourself paddling in tight U-turns.
Stopping power comes from good Brembo Monobloc brakes. And while ABS on a sports bike will always ruffle a few feathers, press a button and it is gone.
The £14,500 price looks steep but all 100 bikes allocated to the UK have been sold already.
Ask at your local dealer if you're interested, though. You might still strike lucky. And you would be. Like Muhammad Ali, this is one very special Boxer.
