Re: BMW Bike Fest 2010 - Oudtshoorn
We currently have 26 entrants (out of 345) from BMW MCC Pretoria - keep on guys, it is going to be a great trip.
The ride down will leave on 18th at a time to suit the majority and to get to overnight stop in good time. I suggest we overnight at Xarieb Dam resort as Club Central has already filled the VanWyksVlei B+B near Colesburg. This will leave us with a good day's ride to arrive in Oudtshoorn by 15:00 on the 19th.
The ride back will be a l-o-n-g stretch of over 1000kms via Kimberley. We will need to be on the road by sunrise if we hope to get back before dark.
Timing our stops well for fuel and not stopping for meal breaks will do the trick without tiring the riders unduly.
With the Buffalo Rally at Mossel Bay over the same weekend, there will be plenty of riders on the road on the Monday...!

Re: BMW Bike Fest 2010 - Oudtshoorn
Registered for the Bike Fest today. But only for Saturday. Will be at the Buff in Mossel Bay for Friday night, then riding up to Oudtshoorn early Saturday morning.
I am also leaving on the 18th, sleeping over in Graaff-Reinet, then only a short ride to the Buff.
Will be leaving Oudtshoorn on Sunday morning to avoid the 'rush'.twisted:
Hoping to make this Buff '3rd time lucky'.

Re: BMW Bike Fest 2010 - Oudtshoorn
Draadsitting makes for a painful butt.
I prefer to think of it as having the best of both worlds.
Also, I will now be staying the Sunday as well, leaving on Monday, sleeping over in Colesburg.

Bike Fest Return Trip.
STOP PRESS! I have today heard that Central and Durban Clubs are arranging a special event golf shirt for the bike fest! All Pretoria Club riders please contact me URGENTLY by PM here or e-mail at richard@mwclubs.co.za - not later than 26Feb17:00 to finalise your order. Cost around R150-175 each (to be confirmed), strictly payment on order - up front!
With various people having different departure dates and times to this event, I propose a loose touring arrangement for the ride. A group facilitated by myself will form the core with routing and support offered within the group. Others are welcome to join up along the way, or to leave the group at Bloem, etc. as you wish takes you...
I am still arranging for possible backup support, but this may only be available on Friday 19th as a pick-up-stragglers-along-the-way-to-get-to-Oudtshoorn, and not a dedicated vehicle driving as sweep behind the group. (The spread is just to great for this)
I have done further planning based on a rider endurance/fuel tank range of 250kms/2hrs between stops. If your bike cannot do 250kms, please contact me ASAP so that I can assist your specific needs. If your butt and/or bike can do more than 250kms, you must stop and fill up at the scheduled stops anyway please.
(I take no responsibility for you running out of 'motion lotion' by filling up at places where you feel like it...!)
So, here it is:
With Thursday 18th being a work day, Gauteng traffic is a major factor to consider.
I therefore intend to depart from the Total Garage N14 South Lanseria (S25.96074 E27.951027) at 08:00 for 08:30 on Thu 18th.
The route down will be via Krugersdorp, Parys, Vredefort to refuel at Kroonstad around 10:30-11:00. From there the route will go via Brandfort (to avoid the Vredevlei tollgate) and refuel again at Bloemfontein.
From Bloem, my proposed route will go down the N1 to refuel and overnight in the Colesberg area.
(Please make our own bookings in the area - Gariep Dam Aventura, various B+B's etc.)
On 19th my route will depart from Colesberg, via Graff-Reinet and Willowmore to De Rust and Oudtshoorn.
Having checked road conditions, the route back via Kimberley is not advised due to roadworks.
I propose returning on Monday 22nd via Beaufort West and Colesberg to overnight in Bloemfontein. I propose leaving Bloem on Tuesday 23rd @ 08:30 for 09:00 and returning via N1 (R33-00 toll at Verdeerdevlei or you can avoid it via Brandfort) to refuel at Koonstad, Then via Koppies, Sasolburg and the R59 to refuel at Engen Blockhouse N and then home to Pretoria via N3/R24/R21 before the afternoon traffic peak.
There are a number of groups intending to ride down to different timetables.
I determined the above to meet a particular riding pattern (somewhat adjusted - I usually leave much earlier!)
Anyone who would like to join up and form a group, please indicate directly with me for logistics purposes.
I will prepare a GPS file for the above routes and ask admin to place it on the Club website for you to download before the time.
