Marnus and his 1200 are taking a break
Our friend Marnus's 1200GS decided this morning that Marnus has been on enough trips and rides this year --
Although it's never good to hear about incidents, accidents and collarbones . .
it was good to hear it was only a collarbone.
All the best with the highly frustrating 'off-the-bike' period Marnus!

Aijaijaijaijai!

Re: Marnus and his 1200 are taking a break
Thank you everyone for the good wishes - It must be the reason why I'm already feeling so much better!
Please excuse the slow typing - I'm much faster with 10 fingers
So what happened? I was making my way to the office on Tuesday morning with the cars piling up as per normal when the schools are not closed. So in Kruger Ave in Centurion at the Dept of Home Affairs, I was passing the slow moving cages on the right hand side when all of a sudden a gold Merc turned right across the road to snap up a parking. I saw that I would not be able to stop in time, so I swerved to the left in an attempt to avoid a colision. And I'm nearly certain I would have been able to if the cylinders didn't stick out so far So the right hand cylinder hit the Merc on the rear bumper and the momentum brought the bike and I down on sliding on our right sides towards the left of the road.
I got up in fear of being driven over and proceeded to pick up the bike (American way). Little did I know my right clavicle was snapped in two!
The bike had sustained damage on the crash bars, cylinder head, screen, mirror, hand guard and even the cap of the brake fluid resevoir!
She was laying in a puddle of oil leaking out of the cracked cylinder head. Note the white lines on the tarmac indicating my final approach.
And this is what I looked like. They recommended an operation because the two parts moved quite far apart, and potential secondary damage from the sharp points.
Funny thing was that the car was driven by a lady that also works at Momentum. After the accident, she went into Home Affairs to get her passport or something while I was waiting at her car for a lift to the hospital. My wife arrived and we left while she was still in Home Affairs office! Guess dome people have a tendency for "flight" whereas my wife prefers the "fight" But she was angry at that lady that left me waiting
All in all I believe I was very lucky and that previous training and time in the saddle helped me to avoid a direct impact with the car.
And if you ever wondered why you bought a BMW? On my way to the hospital, I just gave Allan @ Bavarian a ring, told them where the bike was and they arranged for it tobe fetched. Thanks Allan, Nicole & Roger! And ever thought why a Rallye Pro 2 jacket? Not so much as a scratch on it! But I'm afraid my nearly new helmet needs to be replaced
Now to get the insurance sorted and then to wait for the time I can ride again... Doctor recons 3 months!!!

Re: Marnus and his 1200 are taking a break
Glad you ok - age old story - car driver not looking again.
Hope you are going to nail her good and solid for reckless endagerment etc - throw the book at her - people need to learn there are consquences to their careless actions!
She probably does not even realise that she could have killed you and your family would have suffered for it!!!...and she would have carried on with her life without a care in the world.

Re: Marnus and his 1200 are taking a break
Very glad to hear the "good" news.
BTW, did you know the G450's engine seizes if it doesn't get ridden at least once a month. Happy to help out... hehe
Oh well, now you can build up some Brownie points at home for the next series of trips...

Re: Marnus and his 1200 are taking a break
Man, oh man . . .
As always " I didn't see you "
but the truth is that the driver didn't look !!
One thing I learnt from my accident is that once I claimed from insurance, I was no longer able to sue the driver for damages.
If I'm ever in the same position again ( I pray and hope never again ) I'd leave the insurance and SUE the driver of the car for ALL damages !!
It's time that car drivers are held responsible for their actions !
A bike can always be replaced or repaired, but not the biker !
Good luck with your op and a speedy recovery !

Really sorry to hear about your off. Glad you not too badly hurt and that the bike is also not too badly damaged. Cage drivers, what can we say about them? Had a taxi do the same thing to me yesterday. Luckily i was going so slowly that I managed to brake. Turned without any form of indication.

The lesson we can all learn from this is that too much Momentum is not necessarily always a good thing
Marnus I hope you regain your Momentum rapidly. There is a small rocky path just outside Mamelodi calling......
