2007 F650GS - 10 000km Service
Hi all,
My bike is going in for his 10k service on Thursday. Is there something specific you would recommend, that I must ask to be looked at ???

Hey Rooikat,
When you get the bill you will see that they have covered everything.
Should only be a normal service, chain, sprocket, brake pads should still be fine, but like I said they have a checklist.

You know what the acronym BMW is for - Bring Money With. By now you would know how much money you had to bring with. Just joking the Beemers maintenance compares favourably with the comparative superbikes out there. Over a period of 5 years my maintenance cost on the LT is R0.01 per km. LeRoy

No biggie, just to get the terminology a bit more correct................. I have a superbike and a Beemer (which is termed Hyper sportsbike) and no BM on sale at the moment can be compared to a superbike. Same reason why a Merc CLS63 AMG is not a supercar but a Lambo is. What I'm saying is all "other" bikes out there, are not necessarily superbikes.......in fact, very few are.
Of course, this is to be changed soon with the BMW S1000RR
However, in essence, you are correct…….service cost on a BM compares very favourably to that of other manufacturers. Service level on the other hand is a no contest………BMW is light years ahead

What I can say is do yourself what ever you are allowed to do. On my last service I asked for a headlight protector to be fitted. One of those that stick on with double sided tape. It comes fitted with (3, 10 cent size) pieces and all you have to do is peel the sticker off and press the protector to the headlight. This operation costed me R96. That is R32 for one sticker. Waaaow. I think I must become a sticker plakker. Think of it I can plak for five days in a month and tour the rest of the month.

Re: 2007 F650GS - 10 000km Service
Herewith more info, for the interested ..........
I will try and add the photo's (cut & paste didn't work so well here).
In the eight months since BMW’s announcement that it would enter the World Superbike championship in 2009, the new S1000 RR has been tested at various racetracks in Spain. Now it's been tested for the first time at a track used by the World Superbike series – the Lausitzring in eastern Germany.
A recent two-day test there gave the team a chance to compare the S1000 RR's lap times with those recorded during the 2007 race weekend. By the end of the session the three test riders – Supersport racer Kevin Curtain, Superbike rider Steve Martin and former GP rider Jeremy McWilliams – agreed: "The basics of the S1000 RR are good, the engine has good power, the chassis and suspension are working well and the bike already has the makings of a Superbike racer."
BMW Motorsport manager Berti Hauser said: "We're under no illusions about the amount of work we have to do before the start of the 2009 season. Up to now we've been working on the basics and have done very little development on the bike's electronics; if we keep progressing at this pace we could surprise a few people next year."
'CHASSIS AND SUSPENSION ARE WORKING WELL':
Former GP rider Jeremy McWilliams brakes hard into a corner while testing the BMW S1000 RR at the Lausitzring in Germany.
'IT MAKES GOOD POWER':
Supersport racer Kevin Curtain accelerates the BMW S1000 RR out of a corner during testing at the Lausitzring in Germany.

Re: 2007 F650GS - 10 000km Service
I must tell you about what happened to me with and after the service:
1. I had the bike serviced on Thursday 17 July 2008.
2. On Friday morning, when I arrived at work, I saw that the cover at the back, has fallen off. It was obviously not put back, and locked properly, after the service. And my bike had a flat spot on pull-away, as well as accelerating in a specific gear. I was so upset about the cover, and went back on my route twice to find it, to no avail. At that point I was in a total mess.
3. I phoned Bavarian and spoke to Lennie. What a nice guy !!!!! He told me that they will order a replacement cover, and will let me know when it has arrived, so that I can bring by bike in. I took my bike in, they had it replaced AND they fixed the flat spot. Apparently the temperature sensor (used for getting the mix correct) was faulty. Thereafter it went like a dream !!! Thanks again Lennie for your SUPER SERVICE.
4. Rode to work, as usual on Monday, a bit of a strange feeling, but not something that bothered me.
5. Rode to work, again, on Tuesday, and felt extremely uncomfortable. The bike was very unstable, and I struggled to get around corners. I leave home at 06:15, and it is still dark at that time. Therefore I did not want to stop (a bit scared to get robbed or something). Got to work safely (at last), after riding extremely slowly. Guess what ......... My rear wheel flat, with a pop rivet sticking out of it. I do not know where I could have picked it up, but anyway.... Luckily my fellow bikers at worked are absolutely great. Two of the guys checked, and we realised that the wheel is not totally flat. One of the guys then rode with me to Suzuki Toy Store (at a snails pace), and they installed a new tube for me..... (I mean for my bike .....).
I sincerely hope that this is the last of the 3 bad things that usually happen at the same time ........ (don't really believe in this).

Re: 2007 F650GS - 10 000km Service
I recently had the occasion to ride my R100S to work after a long time of storage. I had to fight the steering to get it to go anywhere. I marveled at how much the newer GS differed from the old one. ON the way home after work I called in at Bavarian to check on my GS's clutch job. I had the techie check the tyre pressure and the front was only just above 100Kpa. Pumped up to spec, she was back to what I remembered before.
Moral: check your tyre pressures...often !

Soooooo true, regarding the tyre pressure checks.
We should actually check the tyres everytime before all rides.

Ask Pauli how to check tyre pressure. He will tell you that is GREAT fun to ride the Mozambique sand on a 1200GS with tyres at 3.8bar !!!!!!

My GS doesn't want to talk to me.......
Luckily the GPS does, but it doesn't tell me anything about flat tyres.

Re: 2007 F650GS - 10 000km Service
This might be a bit off the main subject but can anyone tell me with what to polish my bike after washing? I only wash and dry it, which has always worked well. But my bike’s about 9 months old now and gained a few scratches since new. So I believe some sort of treatment after washing is needed. Normal polish? I’ve heard about silicon spray or something?
Any suggestions please!

Re: 2007 F650GS - 10 000km Service
@ Sias
I only use Meguiar's. Can be bought amongst others from Makro. Bit (ok very) expensive but really good stuff. You can try the Quik Wax, Ultimate Quik Detailer, Quik Detailer ......too many to mention
They also have a produt range spesifically for motorcycles (bodywork, plastics, wheels etc.)
MOTORCYCLE PRODUCTS
Not to say there are not others on the market equally as good but I can vouch for Meguiar's
ps. congrats on your biker status

Now that you mention it… Let me rephrase: I have to scrub clean that dirty son of mine again this weekend!
Don’t know if that sounds any better, but I have decided that he is male and therefore he must be my boy. His appearance and habits just isn’t appropriate for a female?

Took the old LT regularly up to 220 - fully laden, 2-up, new LT still not loose enough - max there 195. So it is still very much a she - being female and all.
