Re: Extreme Silver Award
The question was from a (currently) non-member knowing about the award system - because of our word of mouth - which intrigued him to such an extent, that he is about to embark on his first point.
However, although very interested in the BMW brand, probably more so as a result of the lifestyle spin-offs, he is not riding a BMW at the moment and hence he is not a club member at the moment.
Not knowing if the chick or the egg is first, and armed with the behind the scenes knowledge that he will in all probability only do 1 point on his current motorcycle before converting to the BM brand anyway (for obvious reasons) as well as to keep the BM interest very much alive with him, I said to him go ahead.
Document the trip and if (most likely when) you join the club, it would not be necessary to re-do the point in order to qualify for the award.
I felt at the time (and still do) that all of the above are far more likely to be a drawing card as oppose to deter him by saying no, membership first and then the points.
Like I said before, whatever the final call from the committee is, it might require some (serious) thoughts to be tabled....it is not a cut and dry "no-brainer".....or maybe it is

Sias wrote:On topic, I feel you should be a club member at the time you visit these points. I think there will be very little cases where people visited these points (and took a photo as required) before knowing of the extreme award. So new members might have been there prior to joining the club, but I believe chances that they have taken photos and everything are slim.
Agree with you on this one.

Unity in diversity....yes ?
Isn't this also printed on the outside of a passport?
I'll try this one on our journey as I believe it is one of the languages spoken in the region
how does one ask: where can I buy a very rare 190 x 55 rear tyre around here?....in Khoisan

My serious/urgent recommendation to your friend is to take up membership at first. It is in any case now quite cheap for the remainder of this year. Then he is safe to whatever the Committee decides on this matter.
He does not have to own a BMW to join
I convinced a couple that is joining the 3 Dams to take up membership too as it is cheaper this way than to pay the R70 per bike per day for the four-day trip.
Re: Extreme Silver Award
After the little spill over and no-brainer comments here, I have advised him accordingly anyway …….as you said, just to be on the safe side. Don’t think it’s pleasant to, for instance do AB twice just for the sake of an award.
Not to worry, for now, enough info is available to make a decision albeit not necessarily an informed one.
would be great to still get an answer for future reference though......even greater if a decision can be made within the next few days
Tell me about it……we have been down that road…..and up. Very aware of the fact. That is why the reference was to “ the interest in the BMW brand” Still working on getting him to take the step towards BMW though, therefore “forcing" him to join know might be somewhat premature.….He does not have to own a BMW to join…..

Re: Extreme Silver Award
Nice to have an active forum!
To answer the question:
In the words of our Chairman:
"The Committee only recognises Extreme Ride points reached at a time when the applicant was a member in good standing - i.e. paid up member.
In other words, the applicant must be a member before they START any leg of their Extreme Ride."
This award is a Club Award; For Club Members to visit the extreme points of SA.
The actual application (completion of the form) is only a formality.

So to make a long story short… my proud photo of me the wife and my lovely GSA at Beitbridge… doesn’t count. Can't we have a badge for people that goes to the wrong place?

Quite like this one. Have seen some reports on other forums and on the Motorrad site. Some of them are only reachable on gravel roads so you could even have a "En-light-ened Rider award - Road as well as an En-Light-ened Rider award - GS
Over the last couple of years we have made a point of stopping at some lighthouses - and will be stopping at two in Namibia in January 2010 - Walvis Bay and Swakopmund.
Here some of the ones we have visited:
North Sands
Port Shepstone
Shelly Point, Britannia Bay
Green Point, Cape Town
Can't seem to find the Mossel Bay one?

I'm afraid there isn't an award for 3.99999 points - only for 4 !
Pay attention, Class...!
Actually, taking a photograph at a border post can get you arrested and locked up - ask the tall Belgian about our experience at Beit Bridge!
The SAPS guys at Alex Bay, Kosi and Pontdrif are laid back enough that if you talk nicely to them they will take your photo for you!
(Would you work there?)
Pontdrif is some 7 seconds of angle North of Beit Bridge and easily accessible by tar road - that is why it was selected as the Northern point for the Extreme Rider award.
To my knowledge, there is a point that is further North of Pontdrif and it is now accessible by tar road out from the Beit Bridge border post side.
From Mapsource and Google Earth it is at around S22 07 40.9 E29 39 29.0 - (great geocache opportunity, Etienne?)
But we haven't been up there yet to evaluate it as a usable and verifiable point.
A good reason for a ride...
