Smoke in the morning
I recently bought a K1200GT WITH 20000 km (26000 NOW) on the clock. The bike got the full Remus conversion which unfortunately caused that there was no space for the centre stand. The bike is a dream and I never thought I will enjoy a road bike but this one is really smooth.
One slight problem though - due to the bike standing on the side stand (according to BMW) the headers is lower than the cam in the flat four and BMW assures me there is nothing wrong with smoke when I start it in the morning due to oil leaking into the head at night time. This cause the bike to smoke a white oil smoke for the first 400 metres in the morning. Is this true or is there engine damage?
Between my wife and I we've got 5 bikes but this one is fast becoming our favourite so I really hope there is no serious problem.
Can anyone help?

Re: Smoke in the morning
Welcome to the forum Pietta
Very normal for the bike to smoke at startup. There are a few other reasons for that as well.
Do a search on smoke here http://bmwsuperbikes.com/forum/index.php also excellent info on the K1200GT in general.
don't forget the check out the SUPER SUNDAY III detail on this site (as well as the one in the link) for the 20 Septenber international K-run

Re: Smoke in the morning
Pietta - perfectly normal with the flat four engine you have. Have done 65 000 kms on the 1999 model LT and not 30 000kms on the 2007 LT - happened/happens with both. Explanation from Techs at Bavaria - whenever you stop and park the bike on the side stand - as you do - a minute droplet of oil seeps through the rings - dependant on where and how the outlet valves are positioned - this oil then seeps into you exhaust system - and burns up as you know when starting it.
First time it happened to me i thought the rings were shot - quick call to to Bavaria and was set straight. Normally tends to happen when you have parked the bike where a lot of spectators are about - tends to be somewhat embarasing. BMW's tend to use a pint of oil for every 10 000 kms travelled - is seen as the norm.

Re: Smoke in the morning
LeRoy thank you for an excellent answer. This is exactly what I experience specially the part with the spectators - Murphy's law. People love the looks of the bike as there are not too many off them in our country and there are ussually spectators when I come out of a shop ...... and then - boom. But I now found a way to counter-act this.
When I get on the bike, I tilt it to the right while putting on my helmet and gloves and really takes my time with it. I wait for my wife to start her crome monster. The thing inhales like its alive and then backfire taking all the attention away from me. She then turn that right hand knob which we call a throttle but in her case its a volume control and that makes one hell of a noise with another loud backfirenor 2. By then everybody is looking at her and thats when I grab my chance and quickly start it - lol
But seriously it helps to take time and tilt it to the right - almost no smoke or none whatsoever. Thank you guys for all your help I'm at ease now there is nothing wrong with the bike. Only one problem now - My wife also fell in love with it so this past weekend she grabbed it, so I had to drive one of the other bikes.

Re: Smoke in the morning
Solution for your last problem - sell the chrome monster - and buy her own GT. Cant actually see how the tilting can work as the oil droplet should be in your exhaust system by then.

Re: Smoke in the morning
As far as selling her crome Monster - Their are certain things where Angels fear to tread and thats one of them - I will die young just suggesting it.
When I was younger I lived with the illusion that its a man's world - At almost 52 I know its an Illusion - we are just passing through quietly.

Or as quietly as the "Boss" allows you to. 2 deffinite rules. 1 - The Boss is always right. 2 - When in doubt refer back to rule 1.
