Sharkie down - not too serious Empty Sharkie down - not too serious

Post by Admin 8th April 2009, 21:59

Herewith bad news and good news.
Sharkie had an accident this afternoon.
He's fine.-- still at x-rays to see how serious the collarbone and foot injury are.

Typical accident scenario: A motorcar made a U-turn.
The driver stopped immediately and was very sorry and very helpful - even called him just as we approached the hospital.

We hope he is fit enough to join the Sani trip - even if it is in the back-up vehicle!

Will keep you posted.

Sorry to hear about this accident. Glad that you are ok and that the bike is not too badly damaged. Seems to me that there are just more and more motorcycle accidents happening at the moment. Cage drivers getting worse and worse. Still waiting for my Sprint to be fixed and as I have not ridden for a good few months am going to have to take it slowly when it is fixed. Hope that you are able to make the Sani trip on two wheels.

Hi there guys,

Thanks for all the comments.

Yes, Collarbone is in sy moer in. Seeing the Orthopedic Surgeon today to see if I need to have an Operation - Hope NOT !!!

The collarbone snapped and the little piece that is still attached to the shoulder bent 50degrees downwards, so it needs to be bent back up so that the bones can grow back in line. If the gap is too big, I would need pins.

Ankle and knee is fine, no major damage.

Depending on what the Ortho says today, we will see if I can go to Sani, but obviously in the Back-up vehicle.

I considder myself VERY lucky, it could have been much much worse.

HUGE thank you to Dani, Colin, Tina, Brian and most off all thank you to my lovely girlfriend, Susan, who helped me soooo much.

Ettiene, that really sucks! This reminds when when I tore almost all my back ligaments and some on the front in the week before an exciting trip. It was a real downer, but I still went on the trip though having to stay in the vehicle while everyone was having fun. And of course living on painkillers 24/7 during the entire trip. At least I was helped in and out of vehicles, eating plenty soft food that required no knives.

Really hope that collarbone that is bend can be bend back into place.

My bike has a friend now. Very Happy With it looking more like mine.

You know you just become the official photographer for the trip.

Sharkie - i would rather give the clavicle the time it needs to recover correct. Remember if it does not set correct in the first 6 weeks it will probably result in a bone transplant and a plate to be inserted. Should it also not set correct that shoulder will always be shorter than the other.

A number of years ago we fell with the Tandem - Elsabe broke her clavicle - roughly same as you did - first 6 weeks passed with no recovery and bone forming - resulting therein that we had to do the above - we were effectively off the tandem for roughly 15 weeks in total.

Strongs Boet and hope you can enjoy the trip - albeit in the recovery vehicle - flipside of this is you can drink more beer - even en route.
