Digital Cameras
I am in need of a digital camera for taking pictures of my trips. Something small and slime to fit into my jacket pockets would be great. Nothing fantasy, just take nice pictures like those posted by other members.
You guys and gals have any recommendations. I looking at a budget of up to R3000.

Re: Digital Cameras
The Sony Cybershot is usually a good deal
It's small and compact and takes great pics.
Sony is a very good product.
Look at Makro or Game. Often on sale. Now is a good time especially with Christmas on its way. The last I saw, the 8 megapixel was around R2000
All the pics I have posted her were with my Sony Cybershot.

Re: Digital Cameras
Thanx for the info.
Seems like the Sony Cybershot cameras are the popular choice for bikers so far.

Canon makes an excellent range Ixus and Prixma. Your budget will termine the quality. 7 - 8Mp is good for general biking things.

Re: Digital Cameras
Had a bad experience with the Sony T5 Cybershot a few years ago - the motherboard packed up in the 13th month - just shy of the warranty. Will never again buy a sony camera product.

Re: Digital Cameras
for a "mik en druk" camera, you can safely look at Nikon, Canon, Sony and Panasonic LUMEX (and some others as well) in no particular order.
Try not to buy the entry level (usually the ones with older technology) as the technology on those items changes so fast, you will often find that as you walk out of the shop with your new camera, you have an outdated product.

Re: Digital Cameras
Looks like anything of 7+ MP is good enough for nice pictures.
I see the Sony Cybershot are really slim cameras. Good for bike jackets for sure.
Questions:
What would be a good optical zoom should be?
Any particular features I should look for?
Yep, I never owned a camera before, simply had no need for one in the past. So I am so raw when it comes to choosing a digital camera.

Re: Digital Cameras
The cameras you are looking at have fixed lenses in other words not interchangeable and their zoom will normally be indicated as 3 x or 5 x.
A 5 x zoom is roughly the equivalent of 36 – 180 mm in 35mm cameras which is sufficient for general purpose photography. 36 Being almost wide angle for landscapes and 180 to zoom far away subjects closer and for portraits.
Look at an image stabilizer function of sorts (aka Vibration Reduction or VR) and a high ISO sensitivity
@ Wahl..........
are you selling cameras as well?
the prices quoted by you look extremely good......is vat included.
The Sony DSC T2/W is around R3 700.........1.4k higher than the price listed by you, or is it 2 different models?

Re: Digital Cameras
I have access to some Sony products TV's, cameras and laptops I am not such an expert on the cameras & TV's but the full description I got was DSC-T2 White. I am not sure if there are other T2 models. Have asked for a spec sheet

Re: Digital Cameras
Does the price include VAT as for the other prices shown on Sony ZA website?
The other T2 models are just different colours, thus you have specs sheet only for White model.

Re: Digital Cameras
Dont you hate it when you type a long post and then when you "send", the connection to the web was broken or the site gives and erro
Let me try a short version instead:
Go for optical zoom, at least 8 x; foget about digital zoom. 5Mp is plenty, unless you want to print posters. High Mp has the advantage though of allowing for cropping and digitial zooming afterwards, if you have the time and inclination to do so
Enjoy

Re: Digital Cameras
Saw my brother who was visiting, brought his laptop with his camera. Did plenty cropping afterwards on the game pictures he took, so higher MP does help.

I have a wonderful Canon 350D digital but because it is a SLR it is bulky. becomes an issue when touring as it takes a lot of space.

Re: Digital Cameras
Don't really have a big issue with Sony, but I say Canon. My brother is a serious photographer with all the different lenses and all (obviously SLR and all his gear might just fill a Dakar topbox completely!) - but always recommends Canon as the one and only.
If you say you have up to R3k budget I would rather look at the slightly bulkier cameras, but score serious optical zoom.
For instance Canon PowerShot SX100 IS at about R 2799,99 - with 8MP, 10x zoom, and Image stabiliser
