Alexander Bay: 20-24 Nov 2008 - Extreme points
We are doing the Alexander Bay leg leaving Thursday 20/11, sleep-over at Kuruman and Port Nolloth (2 nights) and again at Kuruman on the return to be home on Monday 24 Nov. One other bike has already showed keen interest to partake. Anybody welcome. Call Johan on a PM to communicate.
Re: Alexander Bay: 20-24 Nov 2008 - Extreme points
Would probably have joined you - but we're already on the walk-about in that same week. Still have to to Alexander Bay and Cape Agulhas. Safe riding.

Alex Bay, down to Agulhas and back is only a few hundred kms longer than Alex Bay and back - two day's ride?

Agree with Richard H, the majority of the trip to Alex and then back from Cape A is not worth doing unneccessarily, so combine it and do each only once ...

Re: Alexander Bay: 20-24 Nov 2008 - Extreme points
Ja. You guys are so right, but then... Over the past two years we have done the other three points and would like to complete the circuit.
Then another rather pushing factor is that Gemmerkat has in the meantime obtained her own little GeSie and wants to do the Gold on her fietsie, with me tagging-along, (behind?).
So Ja if I want to show my total typical MCP attitude, Gemmerkat has to pillion for once before going single for Gold later.

So, go for it..!
(I just can't imagine what you are going to do in Port Nolloth for two nights?)
The Kuruman-Port Nolloth stretch is l-o-n-g (and boring) so I would suggest rather getting to Upington instead on day one of your way out. It will make the Port Nolloth stretch much easier, and you can do the run up to Alexander Bay and back quite easily after checking in or setting up camp for the night in PN. The daylight lasts until late on the West Coast.
(BTW: Enjoy a lobster in Anita's Tavern for me!)

Re: Alexander Bay: 20-24 Nov 2008 - Extreme points
Left Kempton yesterday at 08h00 and arrived in Upington around 17h00.
'Biking opens doors':
Upington is flooded with guesthouses but we couldn't find any avaiiable accom for the night, not even at the Protea Hotel - this on a stupid Thursday with nothing spewial happening in town? As we made a u-turn in one of the suburb streets a ldv with bike-dealer signage stopped and the guy enquired to what we were looking for. We said a nice guesthouse as everythin town is full. Immediately he said 'follow me'. A mate of him, also riding BMWs is operating a guesthouse and will make space for us. We arrived at the place and were pleasantly surprised - with the warm welcome we received and the perfect accommodation. All for R300 for us two for the night! We'll be back.
Upon leaving Vryburg to Kuruman we set speed en locked the sppedocruise at a comfortable speed. Trudie an i were exchhanging nothings as the scenery were quite filled with nothings. We once saw an eland close by behind a game fence and with the thought still fresh in our minds I suddenly, for a very fleeting moment saw an eland, or perhaps a gemsbok with horns facing the front running across the road from R to L right over our trajectory.
The guys in the know say you must do an occasional emergency stop to keep the ABS in trim and this was one of those situations where it was asked for. As we reduced speed rather quick I realised this buck-thngs was in fact two traffic officials running towards us trying to catch our attention. They looked in real distress and I decided to stop. I saw the tripod with scope on the righthand and realised thay muist have a problem as we we just cruising along. Maybe their battery had gone flat and wanted a jumpstart or a flat tyre or... I turned around and when we reached them told them it is dangerous to run if front of vehicles as I thought they were buck or somethiong.
All in Afrikaans - this is mos Noordwes country, not NorthWest
Both sarted apologising that bikes seldom stop.
I asked what the problem is and how I can help.
Then one said I was speeding and it was the fastest for the day, so far. 169km/h.
Obviopusly I was startled and couldn't believe a word. When he said the maximum for a fine is 164 and above is straight to court I knew here is a problem!
Custom kicked in and I started talking about everything that came to mind, the weaher, their hard work in the sun and anything to draw their mind off the actual issue at hand. After about 10 minutes, and two other speedsters later, we parted company and pulled off - best buddies.
For the past few weeks, since Badplaas, Trudie didn't sleep well; Every night she takes a long country ride (in her dreams!) on her new ST that was being aqwaiting delivery. Even after she received the bike she couldn't get over the joy and kept on riding in her dreams - with obvious drowsiness every following morning.
Last night however she slepped like a kitten... 873km for one day was enough thank you! Albeit as pillion on an RT.

Re: Alexander Bay: 20-24 Nov 2008 - Extreme points
Ja we're back in one piece after 2981 km. The longest stretch was yesterday from Springbok to Orkney, 1018km. Seergatsake!
Without polymer protection we would've been painted with faktorre between Olifantshoek and Upington. A few did tref my visor though but Trudie escaped unscathed. Nothing like an RT screen when the critters attack. (Picture)
Breakfast at Pofadder Hotel is well worth mention, and not even a long wait either. Two Gemmerkatte met and spent a short while exchanging ideas. (Picture)
One picture speaks a thousand words.
Now for that Silver medal and during 2010 Trudie and I will tackle the Gold on seperate bikes.
Thanks to all for the best wishes during the trip. We appreciate
