Re: Aftermarket Exhaust
Your bike came from the factory lean to pass certain standards. Changing the mufflers will make it even leaner. You will need to remapp. remapping will also increase the torque.
On gas motors there is a fine line between lean and rich. Leaner runs hotter and uses less gas, hence less exhaust emmisions. richer runs the other way. Lean is hard on the motor and does not give you the performance. Your bike comes with a computer or its called an EMC. It gets information from different sensors on the bike. the problem is when you make changes ( mufflers, cams, hi-flow air box and so on) the EMC does not kinow you made changes so it still functions the same. remapping changes the settings on the EMC so that you richen the bike back up to where its suppose to be for the motor to run correctly.

“Minor” changes like exhaust and air filters do not require remapping......changes not touching the motor. Although not a prerequisite – as the ECU will “learn” over time - a resetting of the ECU is sufficient. After reset, the ECU automatically recognizes the “new” signals form the sensors of which the Lamda sensor located on the exhaust system, is probably the most important. At this time the ECU will adapt itself according to the new signals using the existing map set.
Although I’m pretty sure resetting procedures are the same for most modern BMW’s, they might differ from model to model.
On the inline 4 “K” models, the procedures are as follow:
- disconnect the battery overnight (or a fairly lenghty period....4/5/6 hours)
- connect the battery
- turn ignition on (don’t start)
- turn the throttle fully open till it stops and close again
- turn ignition off and wait for 10 sec
- ride the bike “energetically” (read gun it) for a while

Re: Aftermarket Exhaust
Hi all- Ive just bought a bike again after a 18 year lay off- I would like to change the pipe on my bike I think it spoils the look of a stunning bike-
My question is how does changing the pipe afect the garentee from BM ?
My bikes just gone for its 1000km service- BM do have an after market exhaust thats really expensive and looks exactly the same as the stock one.
Advice apreciated

Re: Aftermarket Exhaust
Voyger - welcome to the forum and good to see you're on 2 wheels after 18 years. Jamie (Madnohb) also has a K1300S and he fitted an Akrapovic (which I understand is endorsed by BMW).
And just because Jamie may not mention it... it can be pricey, but then again, so is the bike
Sooooo Jamie, is it worth the money

Re: Aftermarket Exhaust
Lol thanks my bike is in for the 1000 km service now- I asked they quoted about 18K for the slip on- and its just as ugly as the stock one in fact it looks exacly the same- The main reason I want to change it is because its so ugly- the bike is a lot faster than I am with the stock exhaust

Re: Aftermarket Exhaust
At last……..there is (intelligent) life out there
Most welcome to the forum voyger34.
If you don’t buy the BMW approved exhaust, it can effect your warranty obviously only if it can be proofed that the “aftermarket” exhaust had something to do with the problem. However, in SA such cases are very rear…..they are as a rule pretty lenient locally. Do as most, get the dealer in the boat with you and buy your exhaust from them and have them fit it…….or
(did I say welcome….. )
lately, you can buy a BMW approved “aftermarket” can. In such case, there can and will not be any warranty issues whatsoever…….goes without saying at a fairly substantial premium though . Basically BMW has “licensed” Akrapovic to make a homologated Original Equipment can for them.
The 3 benefits of buying such a can are:
- you very much get a bike specific can;
- quality is absolutely top notch as they are very full of sh!t when screening their “license holders”; and
- in countries where laws are applicable, you get a homologated street legal can complete with certificates and all
however, having said all this I can tell you the only differences between the BM Akra can and the non-BM Akra can for the K1300S are price, the Akra logo which is laser engraved on the OE can as opposed to a sticker on the other, availability and potential warranty issues.
(did I say welcome…….jis ek’s bly om nog ‘n K13 ryer hier te kry )
At the moment in SA only the said BMW Akrapovic is available for the K1300S. No non-BM Akras has landed yet. Remus also launched a Hexacone but it is also not yet available locally.
In so far as the BM Akra can for the K1300S is concerned……trust me it does not look (this can grows on you ), weigh, sound and perform the same as the stock can and lastly………
welcome to the forum
no .....will I do it again if I'm able to?.......without a doubt
don't think so Meneer

Re: Aftermarket Exhaust
Hi Jamie thanx for the welcome and info- I saw the BM aproved add on pipe on the demo bike where I bought my bike- other than a carbon end cone it looked the same- the carbon heat sheild looked realy trick but they said it only comes with the pipe and you cant buy it a seperate part - pity.
My last bike was a Yammie XS 1100 a long long time ago- When I decided to buy one again a few weeks ago I figured they were all well made these days - I looked at evrything available and the K1330 was the best looking bike I had ever seen to my eyes anyway- Its really good to be biking again- oh is there BMW club in Joburg I could Join ?
