Motorcyclists will pay less
Motorcyclists will pay less for toll charges when the electronic toll collection system is launched in April next year, said Freedom Front Plus parliamentary spokesman for transport, Pieter Groenewald, on Wednesday.
"They will be in a category of their own with regards to toll roads and will then be paying less toll fees," Groenewald said in a statement after getting an official reply to a question from the minister of transport.
The system would be implemented as part of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project.
Groenewald said it was unfair that motorbikes were much lighter than ordinary cars but had been charged the same fee.
"This boils down to motorcyclists actually subsidising other vehicles. The Freedom Front Plus welcomes the decision and will ask further questions to ensure that new categories will take effect," he said.
