Serious Mileage
BMW K 1200 LT rider Darren Sandler is celebrating the fantastic achievement of riding 200 000 miles (320 000 kilometres) in just under five years on his luxury tourer.
There’s no need for a car for this 44-year-old from New Hampshire in the USA, as he rides all year round, using his motorcycle for work and leisure, averaging over 200 kms a day – every day – over the past five years.
To travel such a distance – equivalent to approximately 11 times around the world – in such a short time requires a machine that is reliable, fast, ergonomically efficient and supremely comfortable.
Darren knows this better than most, as this is actually the second K 1200 LT he has owned. And what’s equally remarkable is that Darren nearly passed the 200 000 mile mark on his previous K 1200 LT and would have celebrated this long-distance achievement several years ago, had it not been for the actions of a careless driver.
THIS ONE IS FOR LEROY

Re: Serious Mileage
Thanks Chris - goes to show - you cant keep a good bike down. He beats me by far - if you read the comments he does roughly 200 kms per day to and from work - not counting weekends - then ou do rack up the miles.
Have nearly done 40 000kms since July 2007 on the LT - bit short of this however. Would say roughly 50% of which would be open road Km's with the rest being daily commuiting to and from work.
Did 60 000kms on the previousl LT between Sept 2004 and JUly 2007. So in total from Sept 2004 we have done roughly 100 000kms by LT.

Re: Serious Mileage
The question that then comes to mind here - who in the club has done how many Kms and when did this count down start????? If i count the Km's since i started biking in 1976 - suppose one can then add another 100 000kms - but lets rather just count BMW km's??????????

Re: Serious Mileage
I suspect someone like Leo will take the cake for most km's in recent years.
Since I started again (after a 15-odd year break) in May 2007, I first did 60,000km on the Dakar and now 43,000km on the 800GS.

These serious mileages from 2000 to 2010 also reflects the clubs contributions / support / encouragement towards long distance trips.

Van 'n vrou se oogpunt:
2006 - 2007 650 1 = 25000
2007 - 2008 650 2 = 25000
2008 - 2010 800 = 37000
Total 87000
En het tans 37000km op die voorband wat hierdie week vervang word.

Re: Serious Mileage
My R80/7 had 42 000 on the odometer when I bought it.
Around 90 000 I discovered the odometer had broken.
Some months later I found a used Speedo to replace it - with 48 000 on the second odometer. (90+48=138K)
I sold it with 132 000 on. (132-48=84 plus at least 90 = at least 174 000)
The person I sold it to rode it for another 20 000 before they sold it on.
It is still going strong... at around 194 000 kms!
Those BMW type 247 Boxer twin motors are amazing...!

Do I read something else in your words: 'bottomless pit'?
By the way - I start riding in 2005
and for the records:
40 000 on my 650GS and almost 20 000 on my 800GS - nowhere near a record (I don't commute on my bike) but for me utter joy!
