New vs Old
The old forum never gained momentum.........no matter how hard we tried. Was begining to think it is a BMW rider thing????
and now.................70 members allready and counting............vibrant posting and all. Is it perhaps the new broom thing? Think (hope) not.
Wow Dani, you have created a monster here

Re: New vs Old
And a monster needs feeding - we need to get more food in the form of other inactive or less active club members. Maybe our posts are boring to them, they want to read other or different things?
One of the most active forums I have ever seen is at www.advrider.com. It not only for BMW riders, but there is a vast amount of information on there for GS riders.
Another suggestion might be to join hands with another club's forum - I see the Cape Townians also have a forum (albeit not nearly as nice looking, functional or user friendly - thanks Dani!). Aside from club specific activities, there is a lot of info that can be shared across (riding techniques, technical information, trip reports etc.) What do you think?

I lurk there regularly...
(I just looked there and there are 3 471 on-line of which 1062 are registered members...)
I get the impression when I post that I shut down the conversation ...
Just look at how many times I am the LAST POST on a thread !

Ja-nee, i must say. Doesn’t matter what we do - it mean a lot though that people enjoy themselves on a forum. Eish!!!! FREEDOM OF SPEECH. Look at the posts on this forum the last week- 50+ % crap. A lot of nonsense and not related to the club...but a lot of laughs and more...a lot of more friends. Is that not what it is all about????

It's only crap if ADMIN thinks it is...
...or if a significant majority of people who actually and post on this board agree it is.

Re: New vs Old
Personally speaking the single word posts would obviously resort under the 55% as this was used to boost certain peoples postings - one wonders can the web administrator not reverse those posts and deduct it of the individuals ratings. The posts that added value and kept the club informed as to new developments would obviously not fall under said 55%. LeRoy

LOL not at all.. was a great read actually!
But the 'one liner desperate rank seekers' were expecting it, didn't they?

Sorry - lost it completely - obviously some people want this forum to be completely serious with no joking etc - after all the one liner posts were just that - joking with one another!!
Really don't need this pettiness in my life!(Dani - not directed at you)
I'm outta here!!

Re: New vs Old
I see the forum as a place for likeminded and lighthearted banter, spiced with some sensical info on rides, equipment, technique, trip reports and events. Life is too short to take seriously.

Re: New vs Old
All of the posts in this regard was done in a good humour. The reactions on the one-liners as well, were done in a good nature and tongue in the cheek. Cant even see if the posts were deducted or not. Could seriously speaking not give a hoot if it was or not - not important in the bigger picture of things.
Personally i dont see any pettiness therein. This is an open forum and all can express their views as they deem fit, within limits of course. I also sometimes see posts that i dont agree with - simple solution - i refrain from getting involved in said specific thread.
Also i dont see the people taking part in the one liners commenting on this issue at all. So in my personal opinion my comments on it was taken in the vein it was meant - tongue in the cheek humor or as in Afrikaans - Galge Humor (Dark Humour). The posters have known me for a number of years in the club and by now hopefully know my sense of humor - hence no offence was taken.
Regards and safe riding. LeRoy

Re: New vs Old
Although puns and sarcasm are seen as the lowest form of wit, wit is still the highest form of intelligence. So for those that do not get the humour, rather fake it - it is less embarrassing...

Excellent point there Gert - i will from here onwards distance myself from this thread and add no further gems of wisdom here.

Re: New vs Old
Wow, this thread has taken quite a turn.
Humour is an essential part of any forum. Without it the whole vibe/spirit of a forum will disappear. We are coming from a dispensation where a post might have got 50+ views without a single reply…….no interaction and very little humour.
However, one person’s idea of humour is not necessarily another’s idea of humour - nothing wrong with that but......remarks with a sting under the pretence of humour can and will eventually start to push some buttons. Not for us to start making suggestions of how things should be run albeit disguised in so called humour. That is a job for admin and one I think she is quite capable of doing and in fact very successful in.
Having said this, it’s a learning curve for us all and I have the feeling we are busy shaping something good here………….let’s not mess it up
