"DOT Approved" motorcycle helmets Empty "DOT Approved" motorcycle helmets

Post by Richard H 2nd August 2008, 21:43

bounce How many time have you seen stickers on the back of a helmet with the words "DOT approved" ?
Have you ever used this as a method of selecting one helmet over another?
If you did, you've been taken for a ride...Shocked

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A "DOT-APPROVAL" FOR HELMETS....! affraid

There are even State laws in the USA that require bikers to wear DOT-approved helmets,
and yet "D.O.T. itself has no authority to 'approve' or 'not approve' any item of equipment and the phrase 'D.O.T. approved' has no meaning and should not be used."
4/8/98, John Womack, Acting Chief Counsel NHTSA.

Interesting about the DOT, I would've placed a bet that it is some sort of "approval". At least we have a South African standard that is in place

No idea, point was merely that there are standards other than DOT. I would hope that Lafe would adhere to these ?
